EAST Fremantle secured second position in the inaugural WAFL Women's season with a win against Claremont in Round 15 action while Subiaco also geared up for the finals with a thumping victory over Peel Thunder. With Swan Districts having the bye in the final round of the 2019 Optus WAFLW Premiership Season, Round 15 featured a contest between the bottom and top placed teams in the competition but also two other teams trying to finish up as high as possible. THE teams taking part in the finals in the Colts for 2019 might have already been set entering the final round but there was still plenty to play for and it saw wins for West Perth, Peel Thunder, Subiaco and Claremont. The four matches were held at two venues across the two days of the weekend starting at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park on Saturday with West Perth beating South Fremantle 12.7 (79) to 9.8 (62), and then Peel Thunder defeating Perth 10.14 (74) to 8.4 (52). THE last game of the WAFL season took place on Sunday afternoon and it was only fitting that it decided the finals positions with West Coast Eagles winning to advance break the hearts of Perth in the process. Perth had started the season in blistering form winning its opening five matches and as a result the Demons have occupied a position in the top five all season long, and were still in fifth position even after losing to Peel Thunder on Sunday night. It's remarkable to look back now to 2007 when Horsley lost his place in the Subiaco team from the preliminary final win over South Fremantle to Grand Final against Claremont in an era at the Lions of remarkably decorated players from Aidan Parker to Darren Rumble to Allistair Pickett to Brad Smith to Luke Newick to Chad Cossom and the list goes on and on. Revo Fitness Stadium will continue to be the home of Claremont Football Club’s women and men’s teams, surrounded by the new Claremont on the Park redevelopment. EAST Fremantle's WAFLW and Fremantle AFLW star Evie Gooch is looking forward to the upcoming finals campaign with the Sharks in a highly competitive competition but she is just as excited by the young stars coming through in Western Australia. Gooch has been a key part of East Fremantle's WAFLW line-up in this inaugural season of the five-team competition and now with one round to go, the Sharks can finish in second position on the ladder provided they beat Claremont at Claremont Oval this Saturday morning. THE top five teams in the WAFL colts competition might be set heading into the final round of the 2019 season but the battle over third, fourth and fifth remains on in earnest following the Round 18 results on the weekend. Peel, Claremont, East Perth, West Perth and Swan Districts are all guaranteed of playing finals in the colts for 2019 and the Thunder and Tigers are guaranteed of the top two positions, but the order of the other three positions are still to be decided. SUBIACO and Swan Districts asserted their authority on the WAFL Women's competition on Saturday conceding just one goal between them in big wins leaving Claremont and East Fremantle to fight over a top three finish in the final round. The Lions and Swans are now locked into at least finishing in the top three after wins respectively by 49 points and 68 points against Claremont and Peel Thunder on Saturday.
