The Team of the Year has been selected based upon the WAFL Teams of the Week named after each round of the 2019 season so quite simply, the more weeks you were named throughout the season the better your chance of making the side. Subiaco captain Hayley Miller and vice-captain Danika Pisconeri shared the honours in the inaugural WAFL Women’s Dhara Kerr Fairest and Best Award on Monday, September 9 at Optus Stadium with 13 votes each. Miller polled votes in seven of the nine games she played, including one 3-vote game and four 2-vote games. Pisconeri, who had a great season in the ruck for the Lions, polled votes on six occasions including three best-on-ground performances. Miller, who is an AFLW midfielder for Fremantle, added to the Award she won outright in 2018 by continuing her strong form in the WAFLW State League competition in 2019. Read More ...

The inaugural Optus WAFL Women’s Grand Final will be played between East Fremantle and Swan Districts at 2.35pm this Saturday, September 14 at Mineral Resources Park, Lathlain. East Fremantle progressed straight to the Grand Final after defeating Subiaco in the Second Semi Final a fortnight ago and have the chance to defend their League Premiership in last year’s WA Women’s Football League competition. Swan Districts claimed a convincing 45-point win over Subiaco in the Preliminary Final last Saturday to secure their place in the Grand Final, setting the scene for an exciting contest between the two in-form teams of the competition. SUBIACO is the first team through to the WAFL Grand Final for 2019 after beating South Fremantle in Sunday's second semi-final thanks to a third quarter burst while Claremont has stayed alive eliminating the West Coast Eagles. Both semi finals took place on Sunday afternoon to continue the 2019 Optus WAFL Finals Series after the opening weekend saw the West Coast Eagles eliminate West Perth in a thriller and South Fremantle overcome Claremont. SWAN Districts has continued its tremendous late season form to storm into the WAFL Women's Grand Final against East Fremantle with an emphatic 45-point preliminary final win against Subiaco on Saturday. Subiaco had been the standout team for much of the first ever Optus WAFLW Premiership season and did finish as minor premiers, but they lost the second semi-final to East Fremantle leaving them in a must-win situation on Saturday to keep their 2019 campaign alive. The Lions had earned hosting rights for the preliminary final on Saturday afternoon as they took on Swans at Leederville Oval, but it was the black-and-whites who came into the game with the momentum on the back of a four-match winning streak. RYAN Lim has set himself for a bounce back game in Sunday's first semi-final against the West Coast Eagles and he remains confident of how far Claremont can still go in 2019 provided they play attacking football. Claremont fell 39 points behind during the third quarter of last Saturday's qualifying final against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.  But when the Tigers threw caution to the wind and started to play more attacking football, the goals began to flow and they ended up only losing by seven points to the Bulldogs. LEIGH Kitchin's first five WAFL seasons with Subiaco could have hardly gone better but now he enters his first finals campaign as captain at the Lions and for the prolific midfielder, it's all about keeping to plan but ensure the hunger doesn’t dissipate.  Kitchin arrived at Subiaco in 2015 from VFL club Frankston as a virtual like for like replacement for the previous year's Grand Final Simpson Medal winner Jason Bristow who moved into retirement – and has since returned as assistant coach. Not only did Kitchin come in and slot into that midfield role seamlessly from the start of the 2015 season, but he has become an outstanding servant of the Lions over the course of what is now a 104-game WAFL career. HAVING already tasted colts and reserves premiership success at South Fremantle, Jason Maskos desperately wants to breakthrough at league level with the Bulldogs as he prepares for his 100th game. Following on from the footsteps of his father Arthur who played 90 games for South Fremantle between 1985 and 1992, and then would go on to coach his son in colts and be a league assistant, Jason always seemed destined to play with the Bulldogs. WHEN putting together a WAFL team, the West Coast Eagles wanted the experience and leadership of Brady Grey and he continues to pay that off in spades while knowing helping lead team success could help him back into the AFL. It was somewhat a surprise when Grey found himself delisted by the Fremantle Dockers at the end of 2018 having played 21 AFL matches in the previous four years. He had certainly shown along the way he belonged in the AFL, particularly during 2017, and when back in the WAFL with Peel Thunder he produced some outstanding performances. Read More ...

The Awards will include the presentation of the Dhara Kerr Award to the fairest and best player in the inaugural Optus WAFL Women’s Premiership Season.   The tradition of the Dhara Kerr Fairest & Best Award will be continued in the WAFLW State League competition after previously being presented to the fairest and best player in the WA Women’s Football League.
