Optus WAFLW Round 1 Wrap

NEW ground was broken on Sunday afternoon with the launch of the very first Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season across two venues and it was the grand finalists from 2018 East Fremantle and Subiaco who proved victorious. The WAFLW competition has been launched in 2019 as the start of a new era of female football in Western Australia following on from the success of the AFL Women's competition nationally and what the West Australian Women's Football League has been able to lay the foundations for. This inaugural season in 2019 will feature five teams and the action got underway on Sunday afternoon with the two teams who played off in the league grand final of the WAWFL competition last year, East Fremantle and Subiaco, proving victorious. 2019 Kia WAFL State Game

The Kia WAFL State fixture versus the SANFL will be played as a curtain-raiser to the Fremantle v Richmond fixture at Optus this Sunday, May 12.  The game will commence at 12.00pm, presenting an exciting opportunity for players, coaches and support staff to experience the world-class facilities at Optus Stadium.  Read More ...


Optus WAFL Round 5 Wrap

ROUND 5 in the WAFL saw the competition gear up for next Sunday's State Game with Perth and Subiaco continuing their undefeated runs going while South Fremantle continued to impress, West Perth got its first win and Peel Thunder also won big. It was the last round of WAFL action before next Sunday's State Game against the SANFL at Optus Stadium with players right across the board desperate to impress to earn their way into selection to pull on the Black Swans jumper. The results mattered too and Subiaco had to come from behind but kicked five goals to nil in the last quarter to join Perth as the last two remaining undefeated teams. West Perth also prevailed in the battle of winless teams while Peel Thunder and South Fremantle impressed in thumping wins. Read More ...


Round 1 Optus WAFLW Preview

THE new era in female football in Western Australia begins this Sunday with the launch of the inaugural WAFL Women's competition with East Fremantle playing Peel Thunder, and Swan Districts taking on Subiaco. On the back of the momentum built by the past three seasons of the AFL Women's competition, the WA Football Commission is launching WAFLW in 2019 to replace the previous league competition that was the WA Women's Football League. The WAWFL is still in operation running a reserves and Youth Girls competition, but league football now for 2019 will feature the five clubs that make up the WAFLW competition. Read More ...


Round 5 Optus WAFL Preview

ROUND 5 of the 2019 WAFL season sees five fascinating matches including Perth attempting to remain unbeaten against Claremont while one of East Fremantle or West Perth should open their account and Swan Districts has the task to attempt to topple Subiaco. Adding to the intrigue of the Round 5 action is that it's the last chance for the WAFL players to press their case for selection in next Sunday's State Game against the SANFL at Optus Stadium. The WAFL will have a general bye next week to allow for the annual State Game fixture which will be played at Optus Stadium for the first time so players vying for selection to pull on the Black Swans jumper will be extra motivated this Saturday afternoon. Gooch excited to be part of Sharks in WAFLW

EVIE Gooch is fresh off a standout first AFL Women's season with the Fremantle Dockers and now she can't wait to be part of the era with the Optus WAFL Women's competition with East Fremantle. Having spent most of her sporting life up until recently playing soccer, the growth of female football inspired Gooch to give things a try at East Fremantle three years ago and she has never looked back. Donnellan excited to lead Swans into WAFLW

THE WAFL Women's Premiership Season begins this Sunday and Kara Donnellan will be in charge of Swan Districts against Subiaco and she couldn’t be more excited to be part of the new competition. The new-look WAFLW competition begins this Sunday and it will feature five clubs – Claremont, East Fremantle, Peel Thunder, Subiaco and Swan Districts – competing over a 15-round season with plenty of AFL Women's talent spready throughout each team. Round 4 Colts Wrap

SWAN Districts and Peel Thunder continued their unbeaten starts to the WAFL Colts season with Round 4 victories with South Fremantle scoring its first win of 2019 and East Perth prevailing in a thriller over Perth. Round 4 in the colts began on Friday afternoon at Leederville Oval with Peel Thunder beating Subiaco 15.15 (105) to 6.4 (40). Then on Friday night at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park, the thriller of the round took place and East Perth just managed to hold off Perth for the 9.11 (65) to 9.6 (60) victory. Read More ...

ROUND 4 of the WAFL started on ANZAC Day with Perth continuing its stunning start to the season before Subiaco joined them as remaining undefeated on Saturday with victories also for South Fremantle, the West Coast Eagles and Swan Districts. Going back to ANZAC Day, Perth hosted East Perth at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park with the Demons remaining undefeated beating the Royals 14.6 (90) to 7.11 (53). The other four matches took place on Saturday afternoon starting with the West Coast Eagles handing Claremont its first loss of the season, winning 12.5 (77) to 11.9 (75) at Claremont Oval. 2019 Simply Energy State Academy intake

The initial intake of players for the 2019 Simply Energy WA State Academy has been announced ahead of the AFL National 16s and 18s Championships in June and July this year.   This first intake includes 36 players in the 16s age group and 40 in the 18s age group. Both squads can be added to from the WAFL Futures and Simply Energy Colts competitions, while Train On players may also be elevated to the main squad.   WA State Talent Manager Adam Jones congratulated all of the players on their selection and said he was looking forward to working with Western Australia’s most talented young players throughout the program.
