Optus WAFL Grand Final Preview

Saturday, October 3, 2020 - 8:14 PM - by Chris Pike
WITH two teams that arguably are remarkably well matched, with a sold out crowd at a famous traditional venue in Fremantle Community Bank Oval and all signs are for a classic WAFL Grand Final between South Fremantle and Claremont on Sunday. For the first time since 1935 the WAFL Grand Final won't be held at Western Australia's premier football venue whether it be Subiaco Oval or more recently Optus Stadium, and the sense of excitement and anticipation around the City of Fremantle as a result can't be ignored. It's a real carnival atmosphere around Fremantle this week leading into Sunday's Grand Final and the feeling throughout the entire city and then as the afternoon unfolds inside Fremantle Community Bank Oval is going to be exciting to be part of. Curley wants Bulldogs players to experience premiership

Saturday, October 3, 2020 - 5:15 PM - by Chris Pike
TODD Curley knows what it feels like to be a premiership player and what he wants more than anything is to help his South Fremantle players find out what it's like by winning Sunday's WAFL Grand Final. Curley had an outstanding playing career both in the WAFL with West Perth and AFL at the Western Bulldogs. He didn’t quite get the chance at premiership glory in the AFL during his 115 games at the Bulldogs but he did in the WAFL with West Perth in both 1995 and 2003. He has now put together an outstanding coaching career too that started with three years at West Perth which included a preliminary final appearance in 2008, and now in his sixth season at South Fremantle he is in a second Grand Final to go with three other preliminary final berths. Harris and Tigers 'unbelievably hungry' for Grand Final

Saturday, October 3, 2020 - 4:46 PM - by Chris Pike
HE is a premiership captain and coach himself, and his skipper has two WAFL flags to his credit, but he has no premiership teammates left in the Claremont team with coach Darren Harris in no doubt his group is 'unbelievably hungry' to change that. Harris is no stranger to Grand Final glory having being the premiership captain and Simpson Medallist at West Perth in 1995 before then being the coach of the Falcons team that was triumphant in 2003. Then his captain Kane Mitchell knows all about success too having been a key player in Claremont's last premiership teams of 2011 and 2012, but with Tom Lee missing selection for Sunday's Grand Final, those two will be the ones with premiership experience at the Tigers along with Ryan Nyhuis at Peel Thunder. Main's focus on Bulldogs' form, not home ground

Friday, October 2, 2020 - 10:22 PM - by Chris Pike
SOUTH Fremantle captain Dylan Main won't be relying on home ground advantage in Sunday's WAFL Grand Final to make the difference for the Bulldogs, instead he knows nothing but their very best football will allow them to celebrate a premiership. South Fremantle has the rare chance a win a premiership on home soil at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday afternoon with the 2020 WAFL Grand Final against Claremont played there, but there's no complacency amongst the Bulldogs just because of that. Part of the reason for that is the fact that just two weeks ago in the second semi-final at the very same venue Claremont beat South Fremantle by 47 points to book their Grand Final spot and force South Fremantle into a preliminary final after finishing the home and away season on top of the ladder. Freshened Mitchell can't wait for another Grand Final

Friday, October 2, 2020 - 9:18 PM - by Chris Pike
ONLY Kane Mitchell will play on Sunday who was there last time Claremont reached a WAFL Grand Final, but the Claremont skipper knows all about delivering on the big stage and he can't wait to take advantage of being fresh heading into the decider. Claremont is preparing for its first WAFL Grand Final since 2012 when it heads to Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Sunday to take on South Fremantle in front of a sold out crowd of more than 10,000 people. Back in that 2012 Grand Final at Subiaco Oval, Claremont was right in the middle of a dominant period where they were about to play in a third straight premiership decider and about to claim a back-to-back flag in a stretch of finishing on top of the ladder four years straight from 2010-13. Sandover Medal tops Fisher's decision to move west

Thursday, October 1, 2020 - 2:16 PM - by Chris Pike
SAM Fisher made the decision to play in the WAFL and join Swan Districts to taste something fresh with his football and try and to get AFL recruiters to step up and take notice, few things will do that as much as producing a Sandover Medal winning season. The 22-year-old Canberra native arrived at Swan Districts to settle into the midfield on the back of having spent a season in the AFL system with the Sydney Swans and more recently plying his trade in the VFL with the Northern Blues. He had been playing good football but not necessarily banging down the door for another AFL opportunity, so he made the bold move to head to Western Australia and play in the WAFL. Read More ...

Pisconeri with plenty to ponder after second Dhara Kerr Medal

Thursday, October 1, 2020 - 11:07 AM - by Chris Pike
LAST year's Dhara Kerr Medal win for Danika Pisconeri led to a chance to play in the AFL Women's competition and she feels she'd be even better the second year around, but if it wasn’t to happen she has a lot to weigh up considering how multi-talented she is. The Subiaco ruck was presented with the Dhara Kerr Medal at a glittering ceremony at Crown Ballroom on Tuesday night with Pisconeri earning three votes in each of the opening three matches of the 2020 Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season. That would provide her with an unassailable lead as she backed up her Dhara Kerr Medal victory of 2019 when she shared the award with teammate and 2020 captain Hayley Miller. Read More ...

Wednesday, September 30, 2020 - 8:25 AM
Governor Stirling Senior High School completed a hat trick of successes in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup, defeating Comet Bay College by five points in the Waalitj Division Grand Final, played on Thursday, the 24th of September, at New Choice Homes Park in East Fremantle. The 2018 and 2019 champions got off to a fast start at “Shark Park”, booting the first three goals of the game in quick succession.  Governor Stirling’s dominance through the midfield shone early, however a couple of goals to Comet Bay against the run of play kept themselves in the contest at half time, going into the main break 10 points down: 4.1.25 to 2.3.15. Pisconeri goes back-to-back in Dhara Kerr Medal

Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - 8:41 PM - by Chris Pike
IT was a Subiaco double act at the top of the Dhara Kerr Medal leaderboard with a fast starter and strong finisher with Lions star Danika Pisconeri again claiming the WAFLW's fairest and best award just ahead of teammate Abbey Dowrick. Subiaco put together a second straight tremendous season in the WAFLW competition claiming the minor premiership and then reaching their first Grand Final, and that was recognised in the voting of the Dhara Kerr Medal at the Crown Ballroom on Tuesday night. In the end, it was Pisconeri who claimed the Dhara Kerr Medal for 2020 to make it back to back triumphs as the fairest and best player in the WAFLW competition after she shared the award with teammate and captain Hayley Miller in 2019.
