Optus WAFL Preliminary Final Wrap

Sunday, September 27, 2020 - 6:35 PM - by Chris Pike
A TREMENDOUS burst in the third quarter after the rain has propelled South Fremantle to an impressive 21-point preliminary final win on Sunday against West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. The Bulldogs and Falcons locked horns for the second time in three years in a preliminary final down at the port, and once again an upset was on the cards with West Perth going nine points up during the second quarter. But South Fremantle responded with the last two goals of the first half and then kicked the first four of the second half after rain had poured down during the interval which was enough to set up the eventual 11.5 (71) to 7.8 (50) victory. Saturday, September 26, 2020 - 12:30 PM - by Chris Pike
THERE is no fear at South Fremantle about the prospect of bowing out in straight sets after finishing the WAFL season as minor premiers, instead captain Dylan Main is focused on the Bulldogs recapturing their best form knowing they are two wins from a premiership still. South Fremantle was the standout team during the nine rounds of the 2020 WAFL season winning its opening seven matches to secure the Bulldogs the minor premiership for the first time since 2009. The Bulldogs had finished in second spot in each of the last four seasons behind Subiaco ending up in three preliminary final and a Grand Final appearance, so it was a step forward during the home and away season. Premiership would mean as much as any other: Wilhelm

Saturday, September 26, 2020 - 11:58 AM - by Chris Pike
FORGET any talk of an asterisk or less meaning behind the 2020 WAFL Premiership just because of the shortened season, for West Perth's Team of the Year representative Blake Wilhelm, this flag would mean as much as any and the Falcons want it to be theirs. The WAFL season might not have got underway until July 18 thanks to the COVID-19 induced delay, but the nine round competition was as hotly contested as any other campaign with each team playing one another once. Highlighting that was the remarkable race for finals positions in the last round which saw Perth beat out East Perth and Subiaco to claim fourth spot, and ultimately saw West Perth fall just 0.24 per cent short of snatching second position and a double chance from Claremont. Harris legacy grows as Claremont reaches Grand Final

Friday, September 25, 2020 - 9:09 AM - by Chris Pike
NO matter what now happens in next Sunday's WAFL Grand Final, Claremont has taken another step forward in 2020 as the Tigers have in every season under Darren Harris as he continues to build his reputation as a master coach. Harris returned to a senior coaching role in the WAFL with Claremont back in 2017 taking over a Tigers team determined to get back to being the power it was at the start of the decade. On the back of dominating the competition between 2010-13, the Tigers only played in one final in the next four years and that was a losing elimination final effort to East Perth in 2015, but there would be no shortcuts taken.
