Round 6 WAFLW PreviewSaturday, March 26, 2022 - 10:13 AM - by Chris Pike

THE three Round 6 match ups in Round 6 of the WAFLW competition are all fresh combatants this season with all the action taking place on Sunday afternoon.

With Swan Districts having the bye in Round 6 on the back of winning their past three matches in-a-row having starting the new season losing two straight, the six teams in action on Sunday will all be playing one another for the first time in 2022.

The first match features two teams looking to snap their run of losing form with West Perth hosting Subiaco at 12.30pm at Joondalup's Provident Financial Oval. The Falcons are yet to win in the WAFLW competition while the Lions have lost three of their four matches in 2022.

Next up on Sunday at 2pm is the first Fremantle Derby for 2022 between East Fremantle and South Fremantle at New Choice Homes Park. The Sharks are attempting to remain the only undefeated team still this season while the Bulldogs are trying to beat their arch-rivals for the first time in their third WAFL season.

The final game of Round 6 is then also at 2pm on Sunday at Claremont's Revo Fitness with the league-leading Tigers playing host to the reigning premiers Peel Thunder who have now lost their past two matches.

ROUND 5 WAFL WRAP

Meanwhile in the WAFLW Reserves competition, there are two matches also on Sunday starting at 10am with East Fremantle playing Subiaco at New Choice Homes Park.

Then at midday, it's Claremont taking on Peel Thunder at Revo Fitness Stadium.

And in the Youth Girls Rogers Cup, all four matches take place on Sunday with the first two matches starting at 10am. They feature Claremont playing Peel Thunder at Revo Fitness Stadium and Swan Districts facing East Perth at Steel Blue Oval.

Then at 10.30am, West Perth will be playing Subiaco at Provident Financial Oval in Joondalup before at 12pm, East Fremantle takes on South Fremantle at New Choice Homes Park.

WEST PERTH v SUBIACO

West Perth is chasing its first ever WAFLW victory and Subiaco its second of the 2022 season when they lock horns on Sunday at Joondalup's Provident Financial Oval.

Both the Falcons and Lions are desperate for a win when they open Round 6 of the WAFLW season with their clash on Sunday.

West Perth is playing its first ever season in the WAFLW competition and have so far found the going tough against South Fremantle, Swan Districts, Claremont and East Fremantle.

The Falcons have managed just the two goals in the four games but they will be hoping to fire some more shots against a Lions team yet to get fully up and going so far in 2022.

Subiaco were unlucky to lose after the siren to Peel Thunder in Round 1 before a tough loss to Claremont by 45 points in Round 2.

The Lions got their lone win of the season next up against South Fremantle but have since fallen to Swan Districts and then had the bye last weekend so they will be hungry to put in an improved performance on Sunday against West Perth.

From the West Perth team coming off the loss to East Fremantle last Sunday, there are plenty of changes coming into this Sunday's home contest against Subiaco.

Abbey Brimson, Olivia Colotti, Mischa Jezierrski, Jordyn Lilford, Amber Rundle and Chloe Shearing all come into the West Perth team while Isobel Boyce, Keely Byrne, Cameron Dawson, Jaymee Duke, Liliana Grassenis, Jessica Roper and Kayla Van Den Heever are the players to go out.

Subiaco is coming off the bye last week but from the Lions' team that lost to Swan Districts two weeks ago, Tara Garlett, Rianna Matulin and Jess Pillera all come into the team.

There are some significant players going out for the Lions, though, in the form of Lara Filocamo, Abbey Dowrick and Jessica Ritchie.

EAST FREMANTLE v SOUTH FREMANTLE

The first Fremantle Derby of the 2022 WAFLW season takes place on Sunday afternoon at New Choice Homes Park when East Fremantle and South Fremantle lock horns.

Over the last two WAFLW seasons, East Fremantle has won the derbies over South Fremantle by 88, 46 and 24 points so the signs are pointing to a competitive battle again on Sunday at Shark Park.

That's despite the fact that East Fremantle remains the lone undefeated team this season while South Fremantle has won just one of their four matches.

The Sharks had the bye in the opening round but have since been outstanding in recording wins against Swan Districts, Claremont, Peel Thunder and West Perth.

The Bulldogs opened their season by making history winning their first ever WAFLW match against West Perth. While they haven’t won since against Peel Thunder, Subiaco and Claremont, they have been able to delivered decidedly improved performances on last year.

East Fremantle puts its undefeated record on the line in Sunday's derby and from the team that beat West Perth last Sunday, the Sharks have made a host of changes.

Taya Chambers, Natasha Entwistle, Emmelie Fieldler, Zipporah Fish, Jaya Ingram and Madeline Ross all come into the team for East Fremantle to play the Bulldogs.

Meanwhile, Marni Alston, Beth Beckett, Georgia Bett, Leanne Gubbins, Anjelique Raison and Angel Rauter are the players to go out for the Sharks from the side that beat the Falcons last week.

For South Fremantle coming off last week's defeat at the hands of Claremont, there are also plenty of changes as they chase their first ever derby win in the WAFLW.

Rosie Anderson, Leila Fotu, Tahlia Holtze, Sheridan Kowald, Kahra Sprylan, Poppy Stockwell and Aaliyah Ugle are the South Fremantle players coming into the side to take on East Fremantle.

Tahlia Dawson-Gibbs, Noa McNaughton, Stephanie Mostert, Kristen Rudler, Zarlee Tovey, Jess Verbrugge and Mia Whitelaw are the ones to go out of the team that lost to Claremont a week ago.

CLAREMONT v PEEL THUNDER

The current ladder leaders and the premiers of the past two seasons do battle on Sunday with Claremont hosting Peel Thunder at Revo Fitness Stadium.

Claremont comes into the clash sitting percentage clear on top of the WAFLW ladder on the back of thumping wins to start the season against Swan Districts, Subiaco, West Perth and South Fremantle.

The Tigers did suffer a loss to East Fremantle back in Round 3 but courtesy of the size of their four wins they have a mammoth percentage of 456.7 so sit atop the WAFLW ladder having scored 274 points over the opening five games and conceding just 60.

It's been a mixed start to the season, meanwhile, for Peel coming off winning the last two WAFLW premierships.

The Thunder started the season with hard earned wins against Subiaco and South Fremantle, but have since lost to East Fremantle and Swan Districts.

They will be looking to return to the winner's list on Sunday and to try and avoid suffering a third straight defeat but it's not going to be easy against the on fire Tigers outfit.

From the Claremont team that maintained their hold on top spot with a win against South Fremantle last week, Tess Blackburn, Sarah Garstone, Jacinta Valentini and Claudia Wright have all been included to come in to face Peel Thunder on Sunday.

Adele Arnup, Eva Campo, Mhicca Carter and Julia Uhe are the Tigers players to go out of the side from the win that was victorious over the Bulldogs last Sunday.

Peel Thunder is looking to bounce back from losing the last two weeks and have made several changes from the side that lost last week in that Grand Final rematch to Swan Districts.

Jaide Britton, Gracie Fenton, Ebonee Hardie, Sophie Johansen and Ella Roberts all come into the Thunder team to take on the league-leading Claremont.

Whitney Benson, Jade Briggs, Emily Gunton, Dakota Sexton and Kaitlyn Srhoj are the players that go out for the Thunder to face the Tigers.
