West Coast Eagle U23’s take on SAAFL

THE West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s are set to take on the South Australian Amateur Football League this Saturday at the Kingsway Sporting Complex, Madeley. After eight weeks preparation, the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s aim to keep the win on home soil after facing narrow defeat against SAAFL when they last played in WA in 2010. Having lost against the WA Country Football League last Friday at Anning Park, the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s will be looking to win the focus game of the program. Unfortunately the bigger bodied WACFL side outplayed the team, defeating the West Coast Eagles State Amateur U23’s 9.5 (59) to 15.6 (96). This weekend will bring a different level of football again, with the South Australians looking to make their travel worthwhile and take bragging rights into the 2015 Australian Amateur Football Council Carnival held in Tasmania. WA Day WAFL Results

ALMOST 15,000 fans attended the three WAFL fixtures on WA Day on the biggest day of the season with three terrific contests eventuating with East Fremantle, East Perth and Claremont all recording hard fought and important victories. A crowd of 6201 watched the Perth derby at Arena Joondalup with East Perth kicking the first three goals of the last quarter to set up a 10.9 (69) to 7.11 (53) victory over West Perth. Another strong turnout of 5854 then attended Fremantle Oval as East Fremantle held off South Fremantle to win 15.16 (106) to 13.13 (91). The third game on WA Day was at the Claremont Showgrounds with more than 2000 people watching as Claremont held on to beat Subiaco 13.9 (87) to 10.18 (78) in the upset of the afternoon. Proud Tiger Blackwell hopes Claremont is on right track

LUKE Blackwell has grown used to performing in a strong side at Claremont over the past four years and while that hasn’t been the case so far in 2014, he hopes the Tigers are on the right track to start getting competitive again. Claremont has been the dominant WAFL team of the past four years and in that period Blackwell has been a key component of the Tigers' success and become perhaps the most decorated player in the competition in the process. Having started his career with Swan Districts and then spending four years at Carlton for 23 AFL matches, Blackwell returned to the WAFL and joined Claremont in 2009. Read More ...


Round 10 Saturday WAFL Results

SWAN Districts won its eighth straight match to remain on top of the ladder coming from 37 points down to beat Perth by that same margin to open Round 10 WAFL action on Saturday at Lathlain Park. Perth dominated periods of both the first and second quarters with Mitch Morton on fire kicking five first half goals, but Swan Districts worked its way on top and kicked nine straight goals either side of three quarter-time to end up winning 18.15 (123) to 13.8 (86). The win means that Swans have now won eight straight games to remain clear on top of the WAFL ladder while Perth slips to a 3-6 record and face a big task to remain in the finals' hunt. McNamara and Sharks now look to set up finals tilt

JAMIE McNamara enjoyed his first chance to represent the WAFL in last week's State game in his first year back with East Fremantle but now he is determined to keep the Sharks in the finals hunt heading into Monday's Foundation Derby on WA Day at Fremantle Oval. McNamara was one of four East Fremantle players to represent the WAFL in last Saturday's 85-point State match win over the NEAFL in Sydney as he was rewarded for his tremendous form back with the Sharks after spending the last two seasons in the VFL with Williamstown. Now the Sharks head into the Foundation Derby against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval on WA Day with a 4-4 record after an up and down opening to the season, and needing to win to stay right in touch with the top three teams, and the fourth-placed West Perth. Lee turns focus to derby after big seven days

BRENDAN Lee has had a big last seven days captaining the WAFL to a State game win and then leading East Perth to a Foxtel Cup victory, but his sole focus now is on trying to help the Royals snap a three-game losing run against West Perth. East Perth travels to Arena Joondalup this Monday for the traditional WA Day Derby against West Perth with the Royals having plenty of motivation against the Falcons on top of the fact that they are their most hated rivals. West Perth has beaten East Perth the last three times including by 100 points in Round 4 this year and by 49 points in last year's grand final with the Royals' only win in the last five meetings being a tremendous come from behind effort last WA Day at Medibank Stadium. WAFL Round 10 Preview

THE WAFL returns this weekend after the break for the State game victory over the NEAFL with a standalone fixture on Saturday afternoon before three huge clashes on the WA Day public holiday on Monday. The match on Saturday takes place at Lathlain Park with Perth hosting the league-leading Swan Districts. Then on WA Day, South Fremantle takes on East Fremantle at Fremantle Oval, West Perth hosts East Perth at Arena Joondalup and Claremont battles Subiaco at the Claremont Showgrounds. Read More ...

Dual premiership defender Spencer announces retirement

A WAFL premiership, VFL premiership, representing Western Australia, playing AFL football and being highly-respected by opponents and teammates alike are things that Matthew Spencer can now reflect fondly on after announcing his retirement on Thursday night. The 29-year-old began his career with Swan Districts and came through the WA State 16s and 18s system before being drafted to Geelong where he played two AFL matches in 2006, won the VFL team's best and fairest in 2005 and was also a member of the Cats' VFL premiership side of 2007. It was then back to Swan Districts in 2008 with his time with the black-and-whites culminating in the 2010 premiership in one of the most memorable grand finals of all time with Swans beating Claremont by a point. Miller aims to make best of difficult situation in final match

KRIS Miller doesn’t want his 150th match with South Fremantle and 303rd in the WAFL in the Foundation Derby on WA Day at Fremantle Oval to be his last, but it will be and it gives him the chance of a fitting send off and time to decide what he would like to do in 2015. Miller has been playing WAFL football since making his debut in Round 1, 1999 and he thought he would be at least up until the end of the 2014 season, but that now won't be the case with Monday's game for South Fremantle against East Fremantle the last of his remarkable career. Not only will the match be Miller's last, but also his 150th with South Fremantle and 303rd of his WAFL career. Earlier this season, he already became just the sixth player to reach 300 WAFL matches and now he makes history becoming the first to play 150 games at two separate clubs. Read More ...

An Indigenous Women’s All-Star side will compete against a WA Women’s Football League All-Stars side this Sunday, June 1, to coincide with AFL Indigenous Round celebrations. The game will be the third biannual Yorga’s Koodjal Kadadjiny match “Women’s Two Way Learning Match”. Royals crush Redlegs in Foxtel Cup

EAST Perth has cruised into the Foxtel Cup semi finals with a thumping 50-point victory over an under-strength Norwood at Patersons Stadium on Tuesday night. The Royals fielded a strong team and looked fresh having not played a WAFL match the past two weekends and took it out on the Redlegs winning 9.11 (65) to 2.3 (15) after kicking the first seven goals of the game.
