An update from the WA Football Commission

Monday, June 22, 2020 - 2:53 PM
On behalf of the West Australian Football Commission, we hope everyone is enjoying the AFL action returning to TV and are looking forward to community football kicking off in the coming weeks.   Special thanks to the thousands of hard-working volunteers throughout our community for their tireless efforts in preparing for the 2020 season.   Due to COVID-19, the football economy has changed significantly and will be impacted for the foreseeable future. In response, the WAFC commenced work in April on developing a new strategy to outline and reset the structures and delivery models required to support football across WA.   Work is well advanced developing these new strategies and structures to help rebuild WA Football, focussing on the WAFC’s financial model, a leaner staffing structure and opportunities for decentralisation of some WAFC services and programs. Subiaco players set standard even during COVID-19

Friday, June 19, 2020 - 3:29 PM - by Chris Pike
THE restrictions placed on Subiaco coming into the 2020 WAFL season were always going to make it fascinating to see how the league's powerhouse performed, but with professionalism their undenied strongest trait, it's hard to seem them not emerging from COVID-19 a force. Subiaco has now played in six consecutive WAFL Grand Finals, claimed five straight minor premierships and won four flags in that stretch of six years which culminated in a hammering of South Fremantle in last year's Grand Final at Optus Stadium. As a result, there were some limitations placed on Subiaco coming into the 2020 season to try to help create a more competitive environment, but in all honesty now with the season having been so delayed thanks to COVID-19, that all seems a lifetime ago. Friday, June 19, 2020 - 12:33 PM - by Chris Pike
THE sudden retirement of Kyle Anderson might have caught East Perth off guard, but coach Jeremy Barnard was happy to hand the sole captaincy to Patrick McGinnity as he now prepares to have the Royals firing for the WAFL season to open on August 1. Barnard is entering his second season as senior coach at the Royals following on from his decorated playing career as a triple premiership winning captain during the 221 matches he played at East Perth between 1993-2004. When the Royals broke from their partnership with the West Coast Eagles, Barnard put his hand up to return to the club he has such a rich history with and now despite the delayed start to the 2020 season thanks to COVID-19, he can't wait to see his team back out on the park. Returning Edwards wants to help Bulldogs to the ultimate

Thursday, June 11, 2020 - 11:45 AM - by Chris Pike
WHILE he did get a break from WAFL football and living in Perth he was after in 2019, Steven Edwards found himself missing being part of South Fremantle's journey and playing top-level football which has brought him back in 2020. After three terrific WAFL seasons with South Fremantle, Edwards took a break to return to Albany and win a premiership at Royals in 2019, but he's back in 2020 at the Bulldogs and while he hoped to be back well before August, he can't wait to pull on the Red V once more. Edwards originally made the move up to Perth from Albany and started playing colts football at Claremont which led to his first appearance at senior level for the Tigers in 2013 in the Foxtel against West Adelaide at Adelaide's Football Park. An update from the WA Football Commission Chairman

Wednesday, June 10, 2020 - 7:46 PM
I’d like to directly address with you the leak of WAFC salaries earlier this week. At the best of times this is a highly sensitive topic and I fully understand in the current environment sensitivities are at an all-time high. From my perspective this is a deeply regrettable situation and I apologise for the angst it has no doubt caused, particularly for our staff. A full independent investigation is being undertaken on this issue.   There are a couple of points I’d like to specifically address. Firstly, at a headline level, I know the total amount paid in salaries looks like a substantial number but I would ask that you remember it takes a significant number of people to deliver outcomes such as talent academies, competitions, umpiring, indigenous engagement, coaching and school programs across all levels of footy in WA.
