Round 1 WAFL fixtures confirmed Thursday, March 3, 2016 - 2:51 PM

The Round 1 West Australian Football League (WAFL) fixture between South Fremantle and West Perth will be played at 2.10pm on Saturday, March 19.

The game will be televised live on 7Mate from 2pm.

WAFL General Manager Steve Hargrave said the WAFL had been exploring options to play the game as a televised fixture under lights at 7.10pm.

“Promoting the WAFL competition is extremely important and playing a televised Round 1 night game presented a terrific opportunity to do this,” he said.

“We have explored all options to make this possible. Unfortunately we haven’t found a solution to increase the lighting at Fremantle Oval to a sufficient broadcast standard without affecting playability.

“After assessing all of our options, it has been decided in consultation with the 7 Network, South Fremantle and West Perth Football Clubs to play the fixture on Saturday afternoon.

“We are confident this timeslot will still attract a large crowd and television audience for the highly anticipated ‘Garlic Munchers Cup’ between South Fremantle and West Perth, which celebrates the proud multicultural history of the two clubs.

“We will continue to explore initiatives such as this to maximise promotional opportunities for the WAFL competition.”
