West Australian Football Commission election resultsThursday, November 19, 2015 - 9:25 AM

The results of elections for Commissioners of the West Australian Football Commission were endorsed on Wednesday November 18, at a meeting of the Nominee Members of the WAFC (WA’s AFL and WAFL Clubs).

Current WAFC Chairman, Murray McHenry, and Deputy Chair Stuart Love were each reappointed for terms of three years.

Jon Carson was appointed for a three year term and Hon. Cheryl Edwardes for a one year term to replace outgoing Commissioners Frank Cooper AO and Rob McKenzie, who retire on 31 December 2015 after each serving their maximum nine year terms.

 

 

 

REAPPOINTMENTS

Murray McHenry

Reappointed for a 3-year term from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.  

Mr McHenry has been a Commissioner since 2010. He was appointed Deputy Chair in June 2010 and Chairman in May 2015.

Stuart Love

Reappointed for a 3-year term from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.  

Mr Love has been a Commissioner since 2013. He was appointed Deputy Chair in May 2015.

APPOINTMENTS

Jon Carson

Appointed for a 3-year term from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2018.  

Mr Carson has served on the WA Amateur Football League Board since 2013 after 17 years of involvement with the University Football Club as a player, coach and an official in various capacities, including President.

He was admitted to practice law as a solicitor in Western Australia in 1979 and is now one of Australia’s premier energy lawyers. As a partner at Clifford Chance, he works with government, private and public entities on energy, infrastructure, project development and project finance.

Mr Carson was also previously a Tribunal member for the WAAFL.

 

 

 

Hon. Cheryl Edwardes

Appointed for a 1-year term from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2016.  

Hon. Cheryl Edwardes was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1984 and the High Court of Australia in 1986. She was the first female solicitor appointed to the West Australian Parliament in 1989 and the first female Attorney General in WA in 1993. She was a Minister of 12 portfolios over eight years and the longest serving woman Minister in WA when she retired in 2005.

She has been a life-long football supporter and has held memberships at South Fremantle, West Coast and Fremantle Football clubs. As Member for Kingsley for 17 years she supported the local junior and amateur football clubs, including providing assistance to Kingsley Amateur Football Club after seven of its members were killed in the Bali bombings in 2002. 

 

WAFC Chairman Murray McHenry said he was delighted to be reappointed to the Commission and also congratulated Stuart Love on his reappointment and Jon Carson and Hon. Cheryl Edwardes on their appointments.

“Jon and Cheryl are terrific appointments for West Australian football that will add tremendous value with their experience, knowledge and skills,” Mr McHenry said.

“To have such quality persons volunteering their time to contribute to our game in this State is a great testament to football’s value and standing in our community.

“Their expertise will ensure the Commission is very well placed to deliver the best possible outcomes for all involved with football in Western Australia.”

Mr McHenry also paid tribute to retiring Commissioners Frank Cooper AO and Rob McKenzie, saying both had made an outstanding contribution to the WAFC during their nine years of service.

“Frank and Rob are both to be congratulated on their commitment and dedication to the WA Football Commission for almost a decade each,” he said.

“Frank served as Chairman for five of those years and was a tremendous leader, while Rob has also been a key contributor to the successes of the WA Football Commission and ensuring WA football is placed in such a strong position today.
