PEEL Thunder and Swan Districts both came from behind at three quarter-time for important WAFL wins on Saturday that could go a long way to securing their place in the finals while East Perth kept its season alive overcoming a determined Perth.
There were three Round 17 games on Saturday afternoon with Swan Districts coming back to beat West Perth after trailing all day, 9.11 (65) to 8.15 (63) at Steel Blue Oval to move up into fourth position.
Peel Thunder dominated the last quarter against Claremont after being behind at three quarter-time to end up winning 13.11 (89) to 9.13 (67) at the Claremont Showgrounds to consolidate third position.
And East Perth stayed in touch with the top five with a hard fought 13.9 (87) to 9.13 (67) win over Perth at Medibank Stadium.
The round will conclude on Sunday afternoon with East Fremantle playing South Fremantle in the final derby of 2015 at ATOM Stadium with the Sharks looking to end a seven-game losing streak and the Bulldogs needing to win to stay in contention for the finals.
Swan Districts and West Perth played out the thriller of the afternoon with the two teams having made a habit of doing just that in recent years against one another.
West Perth kicked the first two goals of the game and despite Swans drawing level late in the second quarter, the Falcons never trailed at any stage but never led by more than two goals either keeping the black-and-whites in the contest.
The Falcons still led by 10 points when Aidan Lynch goaled at the 12-minute mark of the final quarter but Rudy Riddoch and Joel Houghton kicked the last two majors of the match to put Swans in front for the first time, and to secure the important two-point victory.
Rudy Riddoch was Swan Districts' most effective forward finishing with three goals from 18 possessions while Houghton kicked two majors including the match-winner.
Matt Riggio racked up 27 possessions for Swans while Ryan Davis again worked tirelessly for 19 disposals, 11 tackles, nine marks and a goal.
Second-gamer Jesse Turner was impressive with 23 touches with Warrick Wilson picking up 22 possessions, Adam Faulkner 21, Nathan Broad 19 and Jacob Burnham 18.
Shane Nelson was again prolific in the middle for West Perth racking up another 33 possessions while Aaron Black gathered 26 disposals, Trent Manzone 23, Jay van Berlo 18 and Ray Bartholomew 18.
Nick Rodda and Marcus Adams were again terrific in the back-line for West Perth while Michael Lourey and Kris Shannon kicked two goals apiece for the Falcons.
Claremont and Peel did battle at the Showgrounds with the winner to go a long way to securing their place in the finals, and indeed third spot at the end of this round.
Peel started well with the only three goals of the first quarter but Claremont had assumed a six-point lead by three quarter-time largely thanks to four goals from Kepler Bradley.
However, the Thunder were far too good in the final quarter kicking six goals to one to win by 22 points and now be well and truly on target to make the finals for the first time in the club's history.
Peel welcomed back several Fremantle players who had been dropped and all of them had a point to prove with Clancee Pearce leading the way finishing the game with 40 possessions, 11 marks, six inside 50s and a goal.
Zac Clarke also worked hard for 17 touches, nine marks, 18 hit outs and two goals with Paul Duffield finishing with 23 disposals, seven marks and a goal and Tendai Mzungu 17 possessions and five tackles.
Ed Langdon gathered 31 possessions as well for Peel, Connor Blakely 30, Jacob Ballard 28, Brendon Jones 25, Ethan Hughes 23, Leroy Jetta 22 and defender Tanner Smith 22.
Jack Hannath and Gerald Ugle kicked two goals each for the Thunder.
Bradley was terrific for Claremont with four goals to go with 15 possessions and seven marks while Matthew Palfrey also booted three majors.
Ryan Neates racked up another 31 possessions for the Tigers while Tom Ledger gathered 26 disposals, Haydn Busher 23, Francis Watson 22, Corey Yeo 21, Oliver Tate 21 and Tom Swift 21 in his first league game with Claremont since the winning 2012 grand final over East Fremantle.
Perth got off to a flying start against East Perth with the first two goals to Marshall Jones and Dene White, but East Perth got the last two of the first quarter from usual defenders Kyle Anderson and Paddy Brophy.
East Perth then kicked the first four goals of the second term to lead by 20 points but Perth refused to go away and by the 12-minute mark of the third quarter had got back to within a point.
The Royals still only led by a point at three quarter-time, but they had too much left in the tank in the last term kicking five goals to two to win by 20 points and stay in the finals race, while the Demons have lost their last 10 matches and won just one of their last 29.
Kyle Anderson was again a good target in attack for East Perth for the second time this season against Perth and he kicked three goals, including two in the last term, and has now kicked 10 of his 12 career goals in the two games against the Demons this season.
Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls also kicked three goals for East Perth to go with 24 possessions and 11 marks while Craig Wulff and Fraser McInnes worked hard kicking two goals apiece.
Garry Moss controlled play across half-back for the Royals with 31 possessions while Kane Lucas gathered 30 disposals, Steven Payne 21, Nathan Blee 21, Jamie Bennell 21, Brendan Lee 20, Mitch Fraser 20 and Paddy Brophy 20 out of the back-line.
Tom Barrass was outstanding again in defence with his spoiling efforts while also having 13 possessions and nine strong marks.
Perth worked hard the entire game and put in a competitive performance despite the eventual 20-point defeat.
Marshall Jones kicked three goals for Perth as the 17-year-old showed exciting signs in the forward-line along with Brennan Stack and Callum Walley who both kicked two goals apiece.
Aidan Tropiano racked up another 34 possessions for the Demons, Liam McKenna 30, Brett Wolfenden 25, Jarryd Morton 23, Jacob Payne 22, Michael Sinclair 22 and Brent Latch 20 in defence.
Both players lost a man in the first half as well with Liam Duggan injuring a knee in the opening minutes for East Perth and Perth forward Cody Leggett also not reappearing after going off injured during the second quarter.
