SUBIACO stayed three games clear on top, West Perth consolidated second position and then Peel Thunder improved to third and Claremont to fourth after all four teams recorded victories as part of the WAFL's NAIDOC Round on Saturday.
All four NAIDOC Round matches took place on Saturday afternoon starting at the Claremont Showground, with Claremont getting off to a flying start against South Fremantle and then holding on to win 9.10 (64) to 8.12 (60).
Subiaco maintained its place on top of the ladder with a hard fought 12.13 (85) to 9.8 (62) win over East Perth in the battle of Medibank Stadium co-tenants.
Peel Thunder bounced back from a slow start to hand East Fremantle its seventh straight defeat, 14.8 (92) to 8.18 (66) at Bendigo Bank Stadium.
West Perth dominated Perth to maintain second spot winning 14.25 (109) to 9.6 (60) at Lathlain Park.
Claremont got off to a flying start with seven goals to two in the first quarter against South Fremantle with Kepler Bradley, Beau Maister and Jack Bradshaw all combining for six of them for the Tigers before Isaac Baum also kicked truly on the siren.
South Fremantle controlled the contest from that point on kicking the only goal of the second quarter, three goals to two in the third, and then the only two of the last term.
However, the Bulldogs couldn’t quite take their chances and despite peppering the ball inside-50 in the last quarter, weren’t able to get that one more goal to win and it was Claremont who won to rise to fourth spot on the ladder as South Fremantle slipped out of the top five.
While Maister and Bradley didn’t add to their two goals each in the first quarter, Bradshaw managed Claremont's only two goals after quarter-time to give him four for the game in a match-winning performance from just eight kicks.
Claremont's midfield was terrific with Ryan Neates racking up 31 possessions, Corey Yeo 27 and Tom Ledger 25 while down back Matthew Davies racked up 28 disposals and Oliver Tate 24 while Jack Beeck did well keeping Cory Dell'Olio quiet for most of the afternoon.
Haiden Schloithe kicked three second half goals for South Fremantle to give the Bulldogs a chance and he was their only multiple goalkicker on the day in the absence of Ben Saunders, and with Josh Pullman and Paul Mugambwa in the reserves.
Brendan Verrier had a strong game on the wing for the Bulldogs racking up 33 possessions while Ashton Hams had 30 disposals, Tim Kelly 30, Marlion Pickett 22, Blayne Wilson 21 and captain Ryan Cook 19.
East Perth was able to stick with Subiaco for much of the first three quarters in the battle of the Medibank Stadium co-tenants and the Royals picked up some momentum in the third quarter kicking the only two goals to trail by just the one-point at the last change.
However, the Lions then kicked five goals to two in the last quarter to assert their authority and end up winning by 23 points to maintain their advantage on top of the ladder, and to keep the Royals outside of the top five.
Subiaco was missing the likes of Matt Boland, Lachlan Delahunty, Darren Rumble, Wayde Twomey, Rhys Waters and Chris Deluca, but still had enough in the tank to win the grand final rematch over a Royals team who thumped them back on Good Friday.
Michael Wood kicked three goals for the second consecutive week for Subiaco with Kyle Halligan also booting three majors and Sam Menegola two to go with 22 possessions and 10 tackles.
Leigh Kitchin again worked hard in the midfield for 25 disposals while Brett Robinson had 26 touches, Kyal Horsley 20 and Chris Phelan 17.
Subiaco's back-line did well despite missing Rumble and Twomey with Jordan Lockyer leading the way not only defensively but with 24 possessions and nine marks while the returning Scott Worthington had 20 touches and six marks as well.
East Perth co-captain Craig Wulff kicked three goals to be the Royals' only multiple goalkicker in the game while fellow skipper Brendan Lee finished with 26 possessions.
Steven Payne racked up 30 disposals, Brant Colledge 29, Garry Moss 23, Paddy Brophy 20 and Corey Adamson for the Royals while Fraser McInnes and Paul Johnson teamed up to dominate the ruck with Subiaco missing David Madut.
Having two weeks to stew on a six-game losing run and disastrous record setting loss to Claremont, East Fremantle came out fired up and it was ex-Thunder star Brock O'Brien doing the damage early.
He kicked the first goal and dominated with Jayden Schofield, Eardley and Boston Williamson all kicking first quarter goals as well to give East Fremantle a 22-point lead.
The Thunder hit back in the second term with three goals to one, all from Fremantle-listed players Crozier, Hurley and Blakely, and that had them within eight points at the main break.
East Fremantle again led by eight points when Brock O'Brien added his second early in the third term, but the Thunder nailed the next three through Sean Hurley, Jack Hannath and Leroy Jetta to take the lead.
The Thunder still led by a goal at the last change and Peel ran right away with it piling on five goals to one to come back from trailing at quarter-time by 22 points to win by 26.
Jonathon Griffin dominated in the ruck for Peel with 13 possessions, five marks and 31 hit outs while also going forward to kick three goals as well.
Hurley, Gerald Ugle and Jetta kicked two goals apiece for Peel as well with Ed Langdon racking up 34 possessions, Cameron Sutcliffe 30, Jacob Ballard 28, Hayden Crozier 27, Brendon Jones 26, Connor Blakely 25, Josh Deluca 24, Brady Grey 23, Lachie Weller 22 and Ugle 22.
Boston Williamson and Brock O'Brien kicked two goals each for East Fremantle despite O'Brien adding five behinds from 19 possessions and seven marks against his old side.
East Fremantle's midfield also had a host of good ball winners with Jamie McNamara racking up 31 possessions, Rory O'Brien 31, Cameron Eardley 27, Liam Anthony 24 and Sean Henson 20 while debutant Jacob Green was terrific with 26.
West Perth kicked five straight behinds before getting the opening goal of the game against Perth and that was to tell the story of the day for the Falcons.
They dominated the Demons all afternoon, but with just 14 goals from 39 attempts on goal the margin was just 49 points at the finish when it could have easily been closer to triple figures.
West Perth still kicked the only four goals of the first quarter and then the last three of the second despite 11 behinds in the second term. The Falcons led by as much as 70 points during the third quarter, but some fight late from Perth and four last quarter goals saw them lose by just 49.
West Perth's star midfielders who finished one and two in last year's Sandover Medal count were again outstanding with Shane Nelson finishing with 38 possessions while Aaron Black had 33 to go with three goals.
Co-captain Jay van Berlo also had 27 touches for the Falcons with Andrew Strijk having 23 disposals and Kris Shannon 22 while Chris Keunen dominated the ruck with 21 possessions, nine marks, 39 hit outs and a goal.
The Falcons defence also held up well led by Marcus Adams and Nick Rodda while Michael Lourey kicked three goals up forward. The only downside for West Perth was a knee injury to veteran premiership defender Matt Guadagnin.
Brennan Stack celebrated the WAFL's NAIDOC Round by kicking four goals for Perth while Daniel O'Sullivan chipped in with two and Mitch Morton worked hard for 27 possessions.
Aidan Tropiano racked up another 33 disposals for the Demons, Michael Sinclair 28, Liam McKenna 24, Jared Bell 21, Jacob Payne 18, Brett Wolfenden 18 and Blake Borrett 18 in the ruck to go with 21 hit outs.
