PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Wood emerged as an exciting rising star at Subiaco in 2013 kicking 18 goals in his 10 league games as a 19-year-old and that saw him get picked up by Fremantle, but his 2014 season didn’t pan out how he would have hoped.

Wood never found a position to settle in while playing with Peel Thunder as a Fremantle-listed player and was unceremoniously delisted after just one year with the Dockers.

He decided to make his return to Subiaco but that hadn’t gone to plan either until Saturday when he was instrumental in the Lions' 55-point win over Peel Thunder to move back to three games clear on top of the ladder.

Wood spent four games back in the reserves to try to find some form before coming back into the league team in Round 11, and on Saturday as a forward he was terrific with his pressure laying eight tackles while also having 15 possessions, taking six marks and most importantly kicking three goals.

THE SHINING LIGHTS
Despite having 27 fewer inside-50 entries, 72 less possessions and 27 less marks, Swan Districts beat East Perth by four points on the back of laying a massive 88 tackles and taking their chances in attack when they presented.

It was a brave win by Swans to see them improve to third position on the ladder and there was nobody better for the black-and-whites than this year's State game Simpson Medal winner Ryan Davis.

He was again outstanding in the midfield not only by picking up 23 possessions, taking six marks and driving the ball inside-50 on four occasions, he led the way with his pressure laying a game-high 10 tackles.

Adam Faulkner was also prolific in the midfield for Swans ending up with a game-high 33 possessions but it was captain Tallan Ames that provided the inspirational reprising his role as ruckman from the early days of his 224-game WAFL career.

Ames teamed up with Nathan Blakely to take on Paul Johnson and Fraser McInnes, and had just as big an impact on the win as anyone with 16 possessions, eight tackles, four marks and then the two match-winning goals in the final quarter.

The other three ruckmen in the game also had good afternoons with Blakely contributing 18 touches and 20 hit outs for Swans, and Johnson 20 disposals, eight marks, five tackles, 25 hit out, seven inside 50s and a goal for the Royals with McInnes contributing 20 possessions, five marks and 29 hit outs.

Swans' defence was outstanding to only concede eight goals from 67 entries by East Perth, and despite Justin Simpson being out injured and Ames playing further up the ground.

Tony Notte was outstanding keeping Scott Lycett quiet and also having 16 possessions and four marks while usual full-forward Ricky Cary did well keeping Johnson and McInnes off the score sheet when they were forward.

Nathan Broad provided tremendous drive off half-back as well for Swans with 23 possessions, six marks and five tackles while Matt Riggio ran forward twice to kick two crucial goals on the run.

Matt Rosa put his hand up for an immediate West Coast recall in the midfield for East Perth finishing the game with 32 possessions, 10 inside-50 entries, eight marks and six tackles.

Brant Colledge wasn’t far behind having a strong game in the middle for the Royals as well with 28 possessions, six tackles and five marks while another Eagle Kane Lucas contributed 23 disposals and two goals.

Garry Moss was terrific in the back-line for East Perth not only picking up 23 possessions but also keeping former Brisbane Lions small forward Todd Banfield to just 11 possessions and one behind.

Tom Barrass was tremendous with his spoiling and reading the play at full-back for East Perth as well while Nathan Blee held Tim Geappen to just eight kicks and the first goal of the game.

Steven Payne played a new role away from the wing and was mostly in the forward-line for East Perth and the reigning fairest and best winner kicked two goals from 19 possessions.

Subiaco bounced back emphatically from its second loss of the season last Saturday kicking five goals to one in the first quarter to then never be troubled in an eventual 55-point win over Peel Thunder at Medibank Stadium.

The pressure Subiaco put on Peel was enormous all over the field with the Lions laying 79 tackles led by Leigh Kitchin (nine), Michael Wood (eight), Declan Jackson (six), Chris Phelan (five) and Joel Latham (five).

Michael Wood stood up with his best performance of season back with Subiaco against the team he played with last year while listed with Fremantle kicking three goals from 15 possessions and six marks to go with those eight tackles.

Kyle Halligan, Brett Robinson and Chris Deluca all kicked two goals apiece for Subiaco as well.

The Lions' midfield also got on top as the game wore on led by another former Docker who played with Peel Thunder up until joining Subiaco this year, Sam Menegola, who finished with 29 possessions and a goal.

Leigh Kitchin also had 28 disposals for Subiaco, Robinson 25, Phelan 25 and Kyal Horsley 20.

The Lions' back-line might have been missing multiple time premiership and State players Wayde Twomey and Darren Rumble along with Scott Worthington, but held up well against a dangerous Peel forward-line led by Charlie Le Fanu, Jordan Lockyer, Hayden Kennedy, Aaron Heal and Declan Jackson.

Jonathon Griffin worked hard in the ruck for Peel finishing with 11 possessions, four marks, 35 hit outs and two goals.

Tanner Smith was terrific at full-back for the Thunder keeping Subiaco premiership full-forward Matt Boland to just four kicks and one goal for the game.

Jacob Ballard tried hard in the midfield for Peel with 26 possessions and seven tackles while Hayden Crozier finished with 24 disposals and six tackles and Brady Grey 23 touches to go with eight tackles, seven inside-50 entries and a goal.

Connor Blakely also gathered 23 possessions for the Thunder, Ethan Hughes 19, Josh Deluca 18, Lachie Weller 18, Brendon Jones 18 and Tendai Mzungu 17.

RESERVES STANDOUTS
Swan Districts reserves scored a 12.7 (79) to 9.7 (61) victory over East Perth at Steel Blue Oval with Dylan Nelson continuing his strong goal kicking form booting another four majors for the black-and-whites.

Albert Dean responded to being dropped for Swans following the loss the previous week to South Fremantle by having 37 possessions and seven tackles while David McKay racked up 35 disposals, six tackles and a goal.

Jason Daniels also picked up 23 touches, Jackson Slater 22, Kurt Tanner 21 and Jacob Coniglio 20.

Kester Decke and Clayton Giblett kicked two goals each for East Perth while Scott Jones was terrific in the ruck with 21 disposals, nine marks, 27 hit outs and six inside-50 entries.

Tom Omodei racked up 36 possessions for the Royals, Tom Shanahan 30, Malcolm Karpany 24 and Dylan Main 19.

Subiaco's reserves had a thumping 21.18 (144) to 4.6 (30) win at Medibank Stadium with Jeremy Woodley kicking four goals and Reece Blechynden three to go with 33 possessions, six inside 50s and four tackles.
