SUBIACO moved two games clear on top of the WAFL with a sixth straight win in Round 11 action on Saturday while East Perth, West Perth and South Fremantle all scored impressive wins on the back of five-day breaks.
The only team who didn’t defy the odds and win on a five-day break against a fresher team was East Fremantle as the Sharks went down to the reigning premiers Subiaco, with the Lions winning 15.18 (108) to 8.12 (60) in what ended up being Steve Malaxos' last game in charge.
East Perth, South Fremantle and West Perth all won in impressive fashion, though, backing up well from playing just on Monday in the traditional WA Day fixtures.
The Royals beat Swan Districts 13.9 (87) to 11.4 (70) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval in front of almost 4000 fans while the Bulldogs downed Perth 17.10 (112) to 11.8 (74) at Fremantle Oval and the Falcons defeated Peel Thunder 17.9 (111) to 17.5 (107) at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Not that Subiaco needed any improvement, but the league-leading reigning premiers unveiled another star recruit from over summer on Saturday and Sam Menegola delivered a best on ground performance in the Lions' 48-point victory over East Fremantle.
Menegola signed with Subiaco on the back of being delisted by Fremantle and he elected to join the reigning premiers rather than return to the club he was drafted from originally, East Fremantle, or stay at Peel Thunder where he played some outstanding football in 2014.
The 23-year-old spent most of Saturday on the ball and despite not having played a game yet in 2015, was simply outstanding finishing with 35 possessions, four tackles and two goals to be clear best afield up against his former team.
He now looms as another versatile weapon that Subiaco can use either as a ball-winning midfielder, hard-leading forward, close-checking or playmaking defender or in run-with roles through the middle.
He has proved that he can play all those roles previously and now that Subiaco has him in its line-up, the next cab off the rank is the return of captain Kyal Horsley and then the Lions will feel they are clos to full strength for the first time in 2015.
THE SHINING LIGHTS
East Perth got off to a slow start in front of a big crowd at Steel Blue Oval, but kicked 11 goals to six after quarter-time to end up beating Swan Districts by 17 points.
Gun West Coast forward Jack Darling made his first appearance of the season after troubles with a foot stress fracture, and he starred up forward for East Perth with the West Perth product booting five goals from 10 possessions and seven marks.
Scott Lycett also provided a good target for the Royals with two goals from eight touches, eight marks and 15 hit outs while Paul Johnson was the best big man on the ground again with 17 disposals, six marks, 39 hit outs and two goals. Craig Wulff also booted two goals for East Perth.
West Coast's Xavier Ellis played his second league game with the Royals on return from injury and put in a tremendous performance with the Hawthorn premiership player finishing the afternoon with 27 possessions and weight marks.
Brendan Lee also worked hard for 24 disposals while Kane Lucas picked up 24 possessions, Brant Colledge 23, Garry Moss 20 and Freddie Clutterbuck 19 to go with seven marks, three tackles and three inside-50 entries.
Swan Districts might have been without State defender Justin Simpson, but the defence managed to hold up well despite the eventual loss and several of their backmen ended up winning plenty of the ball.
Nathan Broad finished with 28 possessions and 10 marks while Alex Howard had 22 disposals and 11 marks, Tony Notte 22 touches and 11 marks, Tallan Ames 17 possessions and 10 marks and Laurence Grescos 13 disposals and nine marks.

Aaron Elari also gathered 32 possessions for the black-and-whites, Adam Faulkner 31, Matt Riggio 25 and Matt Rogers while Matthew Jukes was again impressive in just his second league game of the year kicking another three goals.
Despite Michael Lourey being held goalless, West Perth had plenty of avenues to goal led by Matt Johnson who booted four to go with 18 possessions.
Tyler Keitel came in to make his league debut after five games in the reserves since being cleared to join West Perth from East Perth. The 19-year-old key position player kicked a goal with his first kick in the opening quarter and finished the day with three goals from nine disposals and three marks.
Luke Meadows also kicked three goals for the Falcons with Corey Chalmers kicking two including what proved to be the match-winner just before time-on of the final quarter.

Tanner Smith did a terrific job in defence helping to hold Michael Lourey goalless and that could see him required for Fremantle now this week to help in the absence of Zac Dawson, Alex Silvagni and Michael Johnson.

Not only was South Fremantle coming off a short break, but was also without its first choice midfield of Haiden Schloithe, Jacob Martinez and Tim Kelly while full-forward Ben Saunders returned in the reserves from an ankle injury and hurt a hamstring.
In the absence of Schloithe, Martinez and Kelly, South Fremantle coach Todd Curley put Steve Verrier onto the ball with outstanding results with him finishing with a team-high 27 possessions to go with eight marks, four tackles and four inside-50 entries.
Ashton Hams continued his terrific form with another 23 disposals and two goals despite having Perth's Michael Sinclair running with him for much of the afternoon. Jarrod Parry also had 18 touches and Toby Bairstow 17 in the midfield.
South Fremantle's forward-line looked dangerous and combined for 17 goals despite the absence of Saunders and with James Sellar quiet. Josh Pullman was the star with the hard working big man finishing with four goals from 16 possessions and six marks.
Cory Dell'Olio, Paul Mugambwa, Jacob Dragovich, Shaun Bewick and Craig White all kicked two goals apiece for the Bulldogs with 182-game dual premiership veteran White returning to the league side after a month in the reserves.
South Fremantle's back-line held up well also with Adam Guglielmana doing well holding AFL premiership player Mitch Morton to just five kicks and one goal while Adam McIntosh finished with 20 possessions, Kyle Hams 19, Blayne Wilson 16, Matthew Gundry and Marlion Pickett 15.
Despite the loss and South Fremantle managing to kick 17 goals, Perth had several players who did outstanding jobs in defence with Chris Billings shutting down James Sellar while Toby Gianatti kept Cory Dell'Olio quiet and Daniel O'Sullivan had a good battle most of the day with Ryan Cook.
With no Christian Eyres or Ben Power in the ruck for Perth, usual key defender David Johnston was given that role most of the afternoon up against both Josh Branchi and Brock Higgins from South Fremantle, and he more than held his own finishing with 14 touches and 31 hit outs.
Then Perth had the usual suspects working tirelessly in the midfield led again by Aidan Tropiano who amassed 36 possessions while laying 10 tackles.
Liam McKenna had another 28 disposals, captain Dene White 22 and Bret Wolfenden 20 while Michael Sinclair returned from injury to rack up 27 touches and lay eight tackles.
Jarryd Morton and Cody Leggett kicked three goals apiece for Perth up forward with Jacob Payne also booting two to go with 21 possessions in a new role in attack.
Subiaco was coming off a three-week break with the State game and then a bye with East Fremantle having had just five days rest since losing to South Fremantle on WA Day, and that led to a lacklustre start by both sides with just the two goals to the Lions.
However, by half-time East Fremantle was in front but then Subiaco dominated after the main break with 10 goals to two to win by 48 points and remain clear on top of the ladder.
Sam Menegola had a remarkable first game of the season with Subiaco finishing with 35 possessions and two goals, but he had plenty of help from the Lions with Brett Robinson also outstanding with 34 disposals, 12 marks and two goals.
