PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nathan Broad put his hand up to take on the biggest defensive job in the WAFL at the moment against Shane Yarran on Saturday, and the young Swan Districts backman did a tremendous job on the Subiaco livewire.
Despite Alex Howard and Tallan Ames perhaps appearing the most obvious candidates to line up on Yarran, it was Broad who went to his coach Greg Harding during the week saying he wanted the challenge of taking him on and he did a tremendous job.
Yarran had kicked 29 goals in his first six games of 2015, but Broad held him to just the one goal on Saturday and that came late in the contest.
Unfortunately for Broad, it wasn’t enough to stop Subiaco beating Swan Districts by 42 points but it was a tremendous individual performance by him defensively after he has already proven this season that he can be a strong attacking defender and prolific ball winner.
THE SHINING LIGHTS
West Perth again found a way to have plenty of avenues to goal and end up with 16 majors for the afternoon led by three each to one usual source in Matt Fowler and one unusual source in the form of Aidan Lynch in the 32-point win over East Fremantle.
Michael Lourey then also kicked two goals for West Perth and Aaron Black two to go with 26 possessions, eight marks and four tackles.
Shane Nelson dominated the first half just as he has for the majority of the 2015 season and he racked up 20 disposals in the first half, and finished the afternoon with 25 possessions and five tackles.
Chris Keunen worked hard in the ruck for the Falcons and finished with 16 possessions and 43 hit outs after a terrific battle with fellow veteran Rob Young, who ended up with 16 disposals, six marks and 42 hit outs for the Sharks.
Rohan Kerr finished with 21 disposals and seven tackles for West Perth with Steven Browne ending up with 20 possessions, Andrew Strijk 18, Laine Rasmussen 17 and Sam Rotham 17.
East Fremantle had 14 more inside-50 entries than West Perth but couldn’t take advantage kicking just 10 goals for the day from those 59 entries to end up losing to the Falcons by 32 points to end their winning run at four.
The Sharks' midfield worked hard despite the absence of Bradd Dalziell and Jamie McNamara, and were led by Liam Anthony who geared up for Saturday's State game with South Australia with 31 possessions, six tackles and five entries inside the forward 50.
Captain Rory O'Brien then also gathered 28 disposals while former skipper Mark McGough had another 26 touches, seven tackles and five inside 50s in just his second match of the season.
Julian Locantro was playing just his second league game with East Fremantle since crossing from East Perth in the off-season, and the small forward was impressive with two goals from 22 possessions.
Cameron Eardley and George Hampson both kicked two goals apiece for the Sharks but the forward-line was missing having either ruckman Rob Young or James Bristow resting forward, with Bristow not able to back up and play after kicking four goals last Sunday in the win over Perth.
Peel was on top all afternoon at Fremantle Oval on Saturday against South Fremantle, and kicked away with the only three goals of the second quarter and then booted the last four of the match to end up winning by 44 points.
The Thunder's midfield got right on top of South Fremantle's and controlled the contest led by 29 possessions, nine tackles and two goals from Tendai Mzungu.

Tom Vandeleur also kicked three first half goals for Peel having previously only kicked two goals in his 21-game WAFL career coming into the contest.
Peel's defence also held up well with Tanner Smith leading the way keeping James Sellar scoreless while Ethan Hughes, Josh Mathers, Josh Bootsma and Sean Hurley were also solid.
Kyle Hams put in another strong performance for South Fremantle and sent a reminder to State selectors that he perhaps should have been in the squad to be the Bulldogs' best on a tough afternoon finishing with 28 possessions and nine tackles.
Captain Ryan Cook also worked hard and did well with 26 disposals with Simon Panizza also compiling 21 touches for the afternoon, Tim Kelly 20 and Jarrod Parry 18 to go with 10 tackles.
South Fremantle's forward-line struggled in the absence of Ben Saunders and Josh Pullman even though Paul Mugambwa looked dangerous in the first quarter in his first league game of the season before then battling a sore knee the rest of the afternoon.
Cory Dell'Olio kicked two of South Fremantle's five goals for the match as he tried to break free of the close checking Brady Grey.
At the other end, South Fremantle had some strong defensive performers led by Adam Guglielmana who kept Leroy Jetta to just the only goal and four kicks. Blayne Wilson finished with 19 possessions, Adam McIntosh 18 and Alistair Gillespie 17.
Claremont started its season slowly with five losses but now has won three straight to have its 2015 campaign right back on track following a dominant 39-point win over East Perth at the Showground on Saturday.

It was a tough afternoon for East Perth with the Royals recording their lowest ever score against Claremont, and losing a third straight match.
Paul Johnson did all he could in the ruck for the Royals up against both Mark Seaby and Darcy Cameron, finishing with 19 possessions and 39 hit outs.
Co-captain Brendan Lee returns for the Royals after missing the previous week's loss to West Perth, and had 24 disposals while reigning fairest and best winner Steven Payne gathered 25 possessions and Kane Lucas 27 on the wing.
Mitch Howlett did well off half-back with 19 disposals and Nathan Blee had 18 while Tom Barrass continues to emerge as a key defender also ending up with 19 possessions and seven marks.
Subiaco moved two games clear on top of the ladder with a fifth straight win beating Swan Districts by 42 points at Medibank Stadium on Saturday despite the Lions still being without Kyal Horsley, Sam Menegola and Matt Boland, losing Brad Stevenson to a knee injury and having Shane Yarran kick just one goal.
Premiership small forward Chris Deluca stepped up to kick three goals for the Lions as his team's only multiple goal scorer.
Leigh Kitchin was outstanding in the midfield for Subiaco finishing the afternoon with 31 possessions, nine marks and five tackles while Chris Phelan was also prolific with 29 disposals, seven marks, six inside 50s and a goal.

Scott Hancock also gathered 22 disposals for Subiaco, Lachlan Delahunty 21, Hayden Kennedy 19 and Will Fetherstonhaugh 17.
