Round 5 WAFL Wrap UpWednesday, April 22, 2015 - 9:33 AM - by Chris Pike

ROUND 5 of the 2015 WAFL season saw four Subiaco premiership players combine for 21 goals, but not all of them were for the Lions with the action seeing not only the reigning premiers but also East Fremantle, Peel Thunder and Perth record impressive victories.

All four Round 5 matches took place on Saturday afternoon starting with Peel Thunder recording a third straight victory spoiling the 250th game milestone of Craig Wulff beating East Perth 9.16 (60) to 7.5 (47) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium.

Subiaco then moved to the top of the ladder thrashing South Fremantle 24.13 (157) to 10.8 (68) at Fremantle Oval while East Fremantle beat Swan Districts 16.7 (103) to 10.12 (72) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

And finally Perth won its first game since Round 7 last year ending an 18-game losing run by beating the now winless in 2015 Claremont 11.9 (75) to 10.6 (66) at the Claremont Showground.

The results leave Subiaco (4-1) on top of the ladder ahead of Peel Thunder (3-1), East Fremantle (3-2), South Fremantle (3-2) and Swan Districts (2-2).

West Perth (2-2) sits just outside the top five followed by East Perth (2-2), Perth (1-4) and Claremont (0-4).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brett Robinson played just his fourth game with Subiaco in Saturday's 89-point win over South Fremantle but it was enough to already show that the Swan Districts premiership player from 2010 will be an outstanding addition to the Lions team for 2015.

Robinson arrived at Swan Districts back in 2008 from VFL club Werribee and immediately became a star of the competition. There was a time where he very well could have been the best player in the WAFL as a prolific ball winning and goalkicking midfielder.

Knee injuries and illness meant he only managed 83 games with Swans up until the end of 2013, but that did include the 2010 premiership before he stepped away from the WAFL in 2014 to play with South Bunbury.

However, the 29-year-old still had plenty to offer and was recruited to Subiaco and after missing Round 1 through illness, he has now played the last four matches in the league team and got better each week.

That saw him put in a brilliant performance in Saturday's big win stepping up in the continued absence of captain Kyal Horsley to deliver 30 possessions, six tackles, six inside-50 entries, five marks and a goal for the league-leading reigning premiers.

THE SHINING LIGHTS
Peel Thunder didn’t score a goal in the first quarter against East Perth on Saturday and then had just 2.9 on the board at half-time, but dominated the second half with seven goals to three to end up winning by 23 points to win a third straight match to improve to second spot on the ladder.

Peel might have finished with 82 fewer possessions than East Perth for the game but its leading ball winners had a significant impact on the contest led by 29 possessions, nine marks and five inside 50s from Jacob Ballard.

Tendai Mzungu showed he is ready for an AFL return with Fremantle with 27 disposals, nine tackles and six marks as well while captain Brendon Jones racked up 27 possessions, Connor Blakely 23, Ed Langdon 21, Gerald Ugle 21, Ethan Hughes 19 and Lachie Weller 17.

Leroy Jetta was Peel's only multiple goal scorer for the day with two from 18 possessions, six marks, four tackles and four inside-50 entries.

Jonathon Griffin had a big task in the ruck up against Paul Johnson, Callum Sinclair and Fraser McInnes, but was the best of the four big men on the day with 17 possessions and 32 hit outs.

East Perth wasn’t able to get the win to celebrate the 250th WAFL appearance of inspirational co-captain Craig Wulff who finished with 17 possessions, seven marks and six inside 50s as he became just the third Royals player to ever reach the 250-game mark.

Brant Colledge was again East Perth's best player with another 38 possessions, 13 marks, seven inside 50s and two goals to continue to bash down the door for an AFL call up with the Eagles.

Wulff's co-captain Brendan Lee worked tirelessly for the Royals as well with 28 disposals, eight marks, four inside 50s and a goal.

Callum Hart also gathered 26 touches for East Perth, Steven Payne 25, Kane Lucas 24, Freddie Clutterbuck 23, Nathan Blee 23, Alec Waterman 23, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls 21 and Sinclair 20.

East Fremantle might have lost twice and only narrowly beat Claremont since its impressive opening round win over East Perth, but the Sharks were terrific in beating Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval by 31 points on Saturday despite the absence of key defender Matthew Jupp and then losing Sam Read during the first quarter.

George Hampson was the star of the show for the Sharks, particularly in the first half, and finished his second game with East Fremantle since crossing from Subiaco whom he helped to last year's premiership with five goals from 11 kicks and seven marks.

Brandon Ellis also made the most of his few chances for East Fremantle kicking two goals from just four kicks and two marks.

East Fremantle's midfield was dominant throughout the afternoon despite captain Rory O'Brien being productive yet reasonably well held to 23 possessions and four inside 50s.

Liam Anthony was again outstanding with 30 possessions, 14 marks, seven inside-50 entries and a goal while Jamie McNamara had it 25 times, Cameron Eardley 25, Boston Williamson 20 and Bradd Dalziell 20 to go with two goals.

Brock O'Brien also did a tremendous job setting up play off half-back with 25 possessions and nine marks while Rob Young was the best big man in the game with 21 disposals, seven marks and 17 hit outs.

Ryan Davis put in a strong showing for Swan Districts finishing the afternoon with 23 possessions, nine marks, seven inside-50 entries and two goals.

Ricky Cary also kicked two majors from 11 touches and seven marks while Rudy Riddoch was the star of the day up forward with four goals from 18 touches. Tim Geappen worked hard leading up the ground for 18 disposals and six marks.

Adam Faulkner also gathered 23 disposals for the black-and-whites and Matt Riggio 20, Jarrad Blight 17 and second-gamer Warrick Wilson 16.

Subiaco put in a dominant performance after quarter-time kicking 20 goals to six to thrash South Fremantle by 89 points and while there were impressive ball winners in the midfield and outstanding goalkicking performances, the efforts of the defensive unit was every bit as impressive.

Five-time premiership full-back Darren Rumble led the way as the leader of the defensive group and he shutdown dangerous South Fremantle big man James Sellar.

Aaron Heal also had a fascinating duel with Ben Saunders while Scott Worthington had the better of his match up with Josh Pullman and Charles Le Fanu held Cory Dell'Olio well.

The Lions' midfield also virtually did as they pleased as the game wore on at Fremantle Oval and it was led by Brett Robinson who compiled 30 possessions, six tackles, six inside-50 entries, five marks and a goal.

Chris Phelan also racked up 30 possessions for the Lions, Brett Mahoney 22 (10 inside 50s), Leigh Kitchin 22, Hayden Kennedy 21, Simon Moore 21 and Scott Hancock 20.

Then there was the forward-line with Brad Stevenson kicking six goals for the first time in his career having never previously kicked three in a WAFL match and not kicking a single major on his way to being a premiership defender in 2014.

Shane Yarran also booted six majors for the Lions from just seven kicks as he made the most of his chances despite the close checking of South Fremantle defender Adam McIntosh. Yarran has now booted 19 goals in his four matches this season.

Rhys Waters also kicked four goals from 18 possessions for Subiaco in the thumping win.

Ben Saunders was a good target in attack for South Fremantle and managed to have nine shots on goal from his nine kicks. He ended up kicking three goals and did work hard laying four tackles. Cory Dell'Olio also kicked two second half goals for the Bulldogs in his third game of the season.

South Fremantle's back-line was under siege more and more as the game rolled on but several players back there did work hard on trying to set up play going the other way.

Marlon Pickett finished the game with 18 possessions and eight marks while Adam Guglielmana had 19 disposals and Blayne Wilson 19.

Brock Higgins worked hard carrying the ruck once again for South Fremantle and finished with 43 hit outs to go with his five kicks and six handballs.

Ashton Hams tried hard all afternoon for the Bulldogs and ending up racking up 29 possessions and driving the ball inside-50 on five occasions.

Brendan Verrier also picked up 26 touches, Tim Kelly 22, Jarrod Parry 22, Kyle Hams 19 and captain Ryan Cook 17.

John Sgherza played his first league game since Round 20, 2013 after a horror run with injuries but had kicked 16 goals in four reserves matches so far in 2015 and was lively across half-forward against Subiaco with 17 disposals, four marks and a goal.

Perth finally got its first win not only of the season but since Round 7 last year ending an 18-match losing run by beating Claremont by nine points at the Showground on Saturday.

The Demons had missed a golden chance the previous week to beat the Thunder but only had to wait seven days to break their losing run and it was former Peel player Liam McKenna who was the star with 34 possessions and 11 marks.

Claremont lost its fourth straight match to open the season despite four goals from 22 possessions and 10 marks from Jack Bradshaw to continue to be a shining light for the struggling Tigers early in 2015.

Darcy Cameron also earned a call up for his first league game of the season following the suspension of Beau Maister and with Mark Seaby and Haydn Busher both being in the reserves. Cameron finished with two goals from nine possessions and 32 hit outs.
