PLAYER OF THE WEEK
West Perth didn’t have the start to its season it hopped with a Round 1 loss to South Fremantle and the job wasn’t going to be easy on Saturday against Peel Thunder at HBF Arena.

However, the Falcons kicked the first six goals of the third quarter to set up the eventual seven-point win and a big reason for that was premiership player Andrew Strijk.

Splitting his time between the wing and across half-back, the 149-game veteran controlled the contest and finished with 38 possessions, 11 marks and six inside 50s in a best on ground performance.

He now will celebrate his 150th game with West Perth this Saturday against Perth again at HBF Arena where he will earn life membership at the Falcons.

THE SHINING LIGHTS
Subiaco dominated East Fremantle in the second half in a preliminary final rematch from last year with the Lions kicking 11 goals to three after the break to win by 47 points after scores were all tied up at half-time.

Shane Yarran has now kicked five goals in each of the first two games of the 2015 season with the premiership player from last year booting another five in the win over the Sharks from 14 possessions.

Clancy Wheeler kicked five goals in the opening round and booted another three majors on Saturday while Rhys Waters and James Garcia kicked two goals as well.

Captain Kyal Horsley was outstanding for Subiaco after a quiet first round finishing with 35 possessions and driving the ball inside-50 on eight occasions.

Leigh Kitchin continued his outstanding start to his WAFL career with 29 possessions and a goal for the Lions as well while Lachlan Delahunty finished with 26 touches, six marks, 11 hit outs, seven inside-50 entries and two goals.

Chris Phelan also had 23 touches and seven tackles for the Lions, Joel Latham 19 disposals, Wayde Twomey 19, Reece Blechynden 18 and Brett Robinson 17 in his first game with Subiaco after previously playing 83 matches with Swan Districts including the 2010 premiership.

David Madut had the best game of his seven-match WAFL career to date with the 21-year-old ruckman finishing with 17 possessions and 21 hit outs.

Brandon Ellis kicked five goals from 16 possessions and seven marks for East Fremantle in the best performance of the six-game league career from the 21-year-old.

Captain Rory O'Brien racked up 27 possessions for East Fremantle while Bradd Dalziell had 23 disposals, Brock O'Brien 23, Cameron Eardley 21, Danny Chartres 17, Andrew Stephen 17, Jake Schleicher 17 and Conor Regan 17.

East Perth bounced back from its loss to East Fremantle to open the season holding on against a fast-finishing Swan Districts to win by 13 points.

Josh Hill kicked three goals from 20 possessions and nine marks for the Royals while Liam Duggan, Freddie Clutterbuck, Simon Tunbridge and Alec Waterman all booted two goals apiece as well.

Reigning fairest and best winner Steven Payne led the way for East Perth with 31 possessions, 11 marks and six inside-50 entries with Brant Colledge also compiling 30 disposals along with nine marks, seven inside 50s, four tackles and a goal.

Waterman also picked up 26 disposals to go with his two goals for the Royals while Garry Moss had 25 touches, Kane Lucas 24, Duggan 22, Craig Wulff 18, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls 18 and Jamie Bennell 18.

East Perth's ruck brigade worked well also with Fraser McInnes finishing with 15 touches and 20 hit outs, and Paul Johnson 17 disposals and 17 hit outs.

Ricky Cary backed up his four-goal haul in the opening round win for Swan Districts against Perth with another three goals from just five kicks and three marks for Swans against the Royals.

Matthew Rogers, Joel Houghton, Ryan Davis, Nathan Broad and Tim Geappen all kicked two goals apiece for the black-and-whites with Geappen playing his 150 match with Swans to earn life membership.

Aaron Elari picked up 27 possessions for Swan Districts with Matt Riggio also finishing with 26 disposals, Adam Faulkner 25, Tony Notte 19, Rogers 18, Josh Kirkup 18, Tallan Ames 17 and Tom Smirk 16.

Michael Lourey kicked four goals for West Perth in his second game for the club and first home game at HBF Arena. Kody Manning also helped set up the win with three first quarter goals while Luke Meadows chipped in with two majors.

Andrew Strijk delivered a best on ground performance across half-back dominating the game and finishing with 38 possessions, 11 marks and six inside-50 entries.

Shane Nelson also racked up another 32 disposals for the Falcons while laying six tackles with Aaron Black compiling 30 touches, Rohan Kerr 22, Steven Browne 18 and Jay van Berlo 16 in a fascinating battle with former Fremantle teammate Michael Barlow.

Chris Keunen worked hard in the ruck for 12 touches and 27 hit outs up against Jonathon Griffin and Michael Apeness from Fremantle for Peel.

It was a strong Peel line-up on paper not only with the 16 Fremantle-listed players but the WAFL players were of a high calibre as well including captain Brendon Jones, Eddie Dann, Gerald Ugle and Josh Bootsma.

Max Duffy, Nathan Fahey and Danyle Pearce all kicked two goals apiece for the Thunder with Pearce also racking up 22 possessions and driving the ball inside-50 on seven occasions.

Connor Blakely racked up 30 possessions for the Thunder while Lachie Weller gathered 24 disposals, Barlow 23, Jacob Ballard 21, Jones 21, Ugle 18 and Paul Duffield 17.

Jonathon Griffin had a good game in the ruck with 53 hit outs with Michael Apeness providing him his support with 14 disposals, five tackles and 24 hit outs.

South Fremantle's forward-line looked potent led by Ben Saunders and James Sellar during Saturday's eventual 10-point win over Perth.

Saunders finished with four goals from 14 possessions and six marks while also doing well putting on pressure and laying five tackles.

Sellar, meanwhile, provided a strong marking option and finished with 17 possessions, 10 marks, 11 hit outs and the three goals.

The arrival of Blayne Wilson this season has allowed Sellar to play forward rather than the sweeping role across half-back he was playing in the second half of last year to good effect. Wilson had another strong game on Saturday with 23 possessions and eight marks.

Haiden Schloithe worked hard through the middle and across half-forward for South Fremantle to finish with 27 disposals while captain Ryan Cook also gathered 23 touches, Jacob Martinez 19, Shaun Bewick 18, Toby Bairstow 17 and Marlon Pickett 17 across half-back.

Adam Guglielmana had a fascinating duel with Sydney Swans AFL premiership player Mitch Morton and did well keeping him to two goals given the Demons isolated Morton out of the goal square as much as possible throughout the game.

South Fremantle also blooded another debutant with Bailey Matera, the son of Wally, making his first league appearance and showing some good signs with 11 possessions.

Perth showed some tremendous fighting spirit to overcome a 39-point deficit early in the last quarter to deliver an inspired 10 minutes of football that included five goals to put a real scare into the Bulldogs.

The Demons might have ended up falling 10 points short and have now lost 16 straight matches dating back to the end of 2014, but the fight they showed in the second half against South Fremantle would have been encouraging for coach Earl Spalding.

Even more encouraging for the Demons was the fact that they had to do it without Chance Bateman and Jarryd Morton who went down injured in the first half, and with another half a dozen players capable of making a much more significant impact.

Cody Leggett showed good signs that he could be a key forward of the future for Perth kicking three goals from 17 possessions while also laying five tackles. Mitch Morton and Daniel Arangio both kicked two goals apiece for the Demons as well.

Captain Dene White worked tirelessly all afternoon for Perth and led the way collecting 35 possessions while last year's mid-season recruit from East Fremantle Aidan Tropiano continued his strong form in the midfield with another 33 disposals.
