The annual Freo Dockers Cup Year 8/9 Cross District Carnival was recently held at Lightning Park where Swan Districts took home the Shield!
Girls were selected from each of the District’s Freo Dockers Cups, which saw four teams play in an 18 a-side Round Robin Carnival. The teams were made up of the Butler Falcons/East Fremantle, East Perth, Swan Districts and South Fremantle/Peel. This also provided an opportunity for Oliver Beath from the SSWA U16s School Girls to scout out the up-coming talent.
Swan Districts played the 'Thunderdogs' Peel Thunderbirds/South Fremantle in the Grand Final getting over the line in a nail biter winning by seven points 5.1-31 to 4.0-24.
Although the day was not about winning but purly to provide an opportunity for girls to give football a go outside of School and to identify unearthed talent.
Female Football Coordinator Allana Dickie congratulated the District staff for organising the Carnival.
"Initiating an ‘All Star’ Carnival to give the girls another experience to trial football in a fun and safe environment outside of School and encourage them to play community football is a fantastic concept," she said.
"It was also great to see the support of the State U18’s and AFL Women’s players stepping up up taking on coaching roles. The rapport built over a few weeks of training and a one day carnival was just incredible and their involvement will assist in the transition into the WAFC Youth Girls Competition."
