The Lions District has announced the launch of an exciting new football engagement and transition program called the Moorditj Lions, targeting disengaged Aboriginal youth between 11-15 years living within the Lions District.
Moorditj is the noongar term for strong and great. This program seeks to develop these young aboriginal participants into strong community leaders and role models by teaching them a range of life skills using football as the vehicle.
The program will consist of regular training sessions where they will learn the skills of AFL and receive educational sessions on subjects including nutrition, injury prevention, drugs in sport, and respect and responsibility.
The squad will be coached by ex-Fremantle Dockers and Subiaco Football Club player Antoni Grover, and will get the opportunity to represent the Subiaco District in a number of games throughout the summer.
One of the goals is to further re-engage these young men into the community at the completion of the program by linking them up with junior football clubs in the Subiaco District to join the mainstream participation pathway.
Training is on Wednesday afternoons, 3.30-4.30pm at Barry Britton Reserve in Balga, starting on Wednesday 26 November.
