Last Friday, City Beach Oval played host to Claremont District's annual Freo Dockers Cup, which is an all girls AFL carnival for Yr 8 – 10 girls.
Claremont District Development Officer Sam Cousens was shared how pleased he was pleased with the outcome "We were thrilled to introduce two new schools to the carnival this year with MLC and St Mary’s both putting their support behind female football!"
The day included representative teams from Churchlands SHS, Newman College, Perth Modern School, Shenton College, MLC and St Mary’s School.
Although an extremely competitive carnival Newman College took the honours winning both the Yr 8/9 and Yr 10 Freo Dockers Cups.
The games were played in tremendous spirit and Sam Cousens said “The girls always have a fun time playing in this carnival and they genuinely love the opportunity to play AFL against other girls throughout the District.”
He was amazed how far the skill level from all teams has come since the inaugural Freo Dockers Cup was played in 2009. “To see how far the girls have come in the last six years is credit to our schools and all their work promoting and running female football programs throughout the year. There’s now a clear path in place for female football throughout the District and we’re in an exciting phase going forward.”
The Claremont District would also like to thank the WAFC and Claremont Piranhas for their support supplying umpires for the carnival.
Finally, this carnival would not be able to go ahead without the support from the Fremantle Dockers. They have put a lot of time and money into promoting female football and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them in the coming years.
