Great results from Geraldton Female Football Festival Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - 10:55 AM

Over 50 girls aged 5 – 18+ registered to participate in the Geraldton Female Football Festival. The week started with 3 Female footballers promoting this event throughout 6 of the regions high schools. With the schools assistance the representatives were able to run all girl clinics at each school, a chance for the girls to give football a go.

On Saturday the 18th of October, the WA Football Commission in conjunction with Midwest Gascoyne Murchison Regional Football Development Council ran a fun all girls sporting event. With participant coming from all over the Midwest, and a strong representation from the high schools targeted the few days earlier, the girls enjoyed a variety of different activities and games.

Women’s AFL drafted players were there wearing their Western Bulldogs and Melbourne FC colours along with players from the East Fremantle Women’s Football Club showing their passion for female footy.  The aim of the Geraldton Female Football Festival was to engage as many girls as possible into football to then develop a Youth Girls Football competition for 2015.

Proud mother of a participant, Tammy Schofield, says “it was an unbelievable day for female football and she couldn’t be happier with her daughter’s choice of sport”.

Ex – Geraldton Local and now Women’s AFL player Renee Forth was able to share her journey with the girls. Other drafted players including Chelsea Randall, WA’s AFL Female Ambassador, were also all able to share their experiences and promote the message of never giving up and following your dreams.

Despite competing with other local sports on the day, it was very successful, with a lot of interest shown for the all-girls competition.  At the conclusion of the day, each girl walked away with a new pink footy and their very own signed poster from the Women’s AFL Players. The girls can expect at least 3 games before the year is through with a competition developed  in 2015 where the girls will have somewhere to play their beloved sport.
