In what has been described as one of the best games of Schoolboys football seen in recent times Comet Bay College pulled off a miraculous final minute goal to seal their first Eagles Schoolboys Cup crown over a fast finishing Trinity College.
The contest was hard fought throughout with eight points the margin in favour of Comet Bay at half time. They increased their lead to 20 points at three quarter time break and it looked like the game was almost over. But a ‘never say die’ attitude from Trinity had the scores even with only 90 seconds left on the clock.
A terrific goal in the final 30 seconds of the game helped Comet Bay on to a memorable six point victory. Final scores were Comet Bay College 9.4.58 def Trinity College 8.4.52
Ross Davis, founding member of the competition, was on hand to present the Eagles Schoolboys Cup and medallions to the players, coaches and umpires.
Jake Howes (Comet Bay College) and Brandon Starcevich (Trinity College) were presented with the special Eagles Schoolboys Cup footballs used in the match as recognition for being their school best players in the grand final. The Ross Davis Medal was awarded to Jackson Perry from Comet Bay College for his outstanding contributions throughout the competition.
Since the competitions inception in 1983, the Eagles Schoolboys Cup has grown to become WA’s premier lower school football competition with 3,925 students from over 180 schools competing this year.
One of the major directions of the WA Football Commission and School Sport WA when the competition was established was to re-establish Australian Rules Football into all Secondary Schools.
Over the years football has provided the vehicle where values like loyalty, teamwork, respect, leadership, mateship, endeavor and integrity are taught. Both teams demonstrated these qualities in a highly skilled display and in true sportsman’s like manner.
“The West Australian Football Commission greatly appreciates the support received from The West Coast Eagles and School Sport WA for the contribution of the Eagles Schoolboys Cup.
On behalf of the Commission I would also like to sincerely thank those teachers who gave up their time to coach a school football team in the Eagles Schoolboys Cup competition” said Schools Completions Manager Clayton Anderson.
