Round 19 WAFL ResultsSaturday, August 2, 2014 - 7:45 PM - by Chris Pike

SUBIACO won its top-of-the-table clash with East Perth on Saturday but missed out on moving to top spot by the narrowest possible margin while West Perth, South Fremantle and Peel Thunder were the other Round 19 WAFL winners.

All eyes were on Medibank Stadium for the clash between the top two teams and Leederville co-tenants and in the finish it was Subiaco who prevailed 15.7 (97) to 10.9 (69).

The other three matches on Saturday afternoon saw West Perth beat Swan Districts 14.9 (93) to 5.7 (37) at Joondalup's HBF Arena, South Fremantle defeat East Fremantle 16.12 (108) to 9.11 (65) at ATOM Stadium and Peel Thunder thrash Perth 21.14 (140) to 12.3 (75) at Lathlain Park.

East Perth had won 10 straight matches while Subiaco had won its last four meaning not only was Saturday's clash at Medibank Stadium featuring the teams in the top two spots on the ladder, but also sides in terrific form.

Subiaco was also the last team to beat East Perth back on Good Friday and the Lions repeated that performance on Saturday leading all afternoon to down the Royals by 28 points in the finish.

The Lions held an 11-point lead at quarter-time and had stretched that to 14 by half-time, 19 at three quarter-time and 28 by the final siren.

The win means that East Perth and Subiaco now both sit on 13 wins for the season but the Royals remain in top spot virtue of a 0.02 percentage advantage, and having also played one less game than the Lions.

The league's leading goalkicker Matt Boland booted three goals for Subiaco and George Hampson added two, but it was captain Kyal Horsley who was the star yet again for the Lions finishing with 27 possessions, seven tackles, seven inside 50s and two goals.

Chris Phelan also gathered 23 disposals for Subiaco, Shaun Hildebrandt 23, Jason Bristow 21, Rhys Waters 21 and Brett Mahoney 21.

Josh Smith kicked three goals for East Perth with Will Maginness and Garry Moss kicking two apiece.

Callum Sinclair worked hard for 24 possessions, 10 marks and34 hit outs while Steven Payne racked up 26 disposals, Brendan Lee 22, Craig Wulff 21, Nathan Blee 20 and Brant Colledge 20.

At HBF Arena, West Perth kicked the only seven goals of the first half with Swan Districts' only behind coming courtesy of a rushed behind by a Falcons defender.

West Perth had nine goals on the board before eventually Swan Districts scored a major courtesy of Jarrad Blight at the 17-minute of the third quarter, and despite Swans then kicking four final term goals, the Falcons cruised to the 56-point victory to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

Kris Shannon kicked three goals for West Perth with Laine Rasmussen and Anthony Tsalikis adding two apiece.

West Perth did keep possession of the ball a lot but still dominated with 123 more disposals, an incredible 172 marks to 59 and perhaps most surprisingly only four more inside-50 entries.

Aaron Black and Shane Nelson were both prolific with 44 possessions each while Rohan Kerr was best afield with 39. Luke Tedesco also had 29 touches and Jay van Berlo 24.

West Perth's defence was also terrific with Luke Meadows and Dan Hunt keeping Ryan Davis and Tim Geappen goalless respectively while Luke Tedesco racked up 29 possessions and took 16 marks.

Little went right for Swan Districts including captain Tallan Ames leaving the field on a stretcher after having his head slammed into the ground and Graham Jetta being reported in the last quarter.

Matthew Rogers worked hard for 22 possessions and two goals with Aaron Elari having 25 disposals, Tony Notte 23, Blaine Boekhorst 23 and Jarrad Blight 22. Alex Howard was strong in defence.

The final derby of 2014 took place at ATOM Stadium, the newly named East Fremantle Oval, and it was South Fremantle who continued its good run at the venue recording a comfortable 43-point victory.

The win is South Fremantle's fifth of the WAFL season and it is a defeat for East Fremantle that means it has not yet quite locked away a finals position.

A win on Saturday and the Sharks would have been guaranteed a finals berth, but now their loss to the Bulldogs leaves the door slightly ajar for Claremont and West Perth with four rounds of the 2014 season remaining.

The Bulldogs kicked the first four goals of the contest to open up a 24-point quarter-time advantage before they led by as much as 38 points during the second term and still by 31 at the long break.

South Fremantle ended up leading by as much as 51 points during the second half before ending up winning by 43 to claim the Uittenbroek-Ciccotosto Cup.

Ben Saunders kicked four goals for South Fremantle with Anthony Collica adding three, Ben Sokol two and debutant Jarrod Pickett two including his first with the first kick of his league career.

Ashton Hams racked up 33 possessions for South Fremantle, Toby Bairstow 30, Tim Kelly 30, James Sellar 25, Jarrod Parry 24, Haiden Schloithe 23, Jacob Martinez 23 and Shaun Bewick 19.

Jack Perham worked hard for 20 possessions, 11 marks and three goals for East Fremantle with Ryan Lester-Smith and Rob Young adding two majors apiece.

Rory O'Brien racked up another 26 possessions, Brock O'Brien 26 and Mark McGough 20.

Perth was missing the majority of what it would have considered its first choice 22 at the start of the season meaning it was always going to be a tough ask against a Peel team with only five players not currently listen by Fremantle.

The Demons started brightly to lead by three points at quarter-time, but the Thunder worked their way on top from there to lead by 17 points at half-time, 31 at three quarter-time and then 65 by the final siren.

Michael Wood kicked five goals for Peel from 25 possessions and five marks with Max Duffy also kicking three majors to go with his 25 touches and nine marks.

Brendon Jones, Colin Sylvia, Hayden Crozier and Matt Taberner all kicked two goals apiece as well for Peel.

Anthony Morabito racked up 31 possessions, Crozier 30, Jones 29, Jacob Ballard 28, Sylvia 23, Matt Brown 21 and Eddie Dann 20.

Mark Deaves kicked four goals from five kicks from Perth with Matt Moody and Daniel O'Sullivan adding two goals apiece.

Aidan Tropiano racked up 27 possessions, Gerald Ugle 25, Chance Bateman 20, Dene White 20, Cameron Manuel 20, Michael Sinclair 19 and Rowan Brookes 18.
