THE WAFL has a new ladder-leader with East Perth replacing Swan Districts on top with the Royals thumping the Demons and Swans losing to Subiaco in a remarkable contest at Steel Blue Oval with East Fremantle and West Perth also winning to continue their fight over fourth spot.
All four WAFL matches took place on Saturday afternoon with Subiaco beating Swan Districts 22.10 (142) to 14.10 (94) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval and East Perth scoring a thumping 22.8 (140) to 9.6 (60) victory at Lathlain Park.
Those two results mean that East Perth joins Swan Districts on an 8-2 record and the boost to the Royals' percentage and the hit that Swans' took conceding the last seven goals to Subiaco means that East Perth is now on top of the WAFL ladder after 11 rounds.
Swan Districts and Subiaco are only just behind in second and third positions respectively while East Fremantle remains fourth on 6-4 and West Perth fifth on 5-5 with the two teams to meet next Saturday at Arena Joondalup.
Also on Saturday, East Fremantle beat Peel Thunder 15.10 (100) to 11.9 (75) at East Fremantle Oval and West Perth overcame not scoring a goal in the final quarter to beat Claremont 10.14 (74) to 9.11 (65) at the Claremont Showground.
Saturday's losers Perth, Claremont and Peel, as well as South Fremantle who had the bye, now look unlikely to remain in contention for the finals in 2014 with a two-game break from the fifth-placed West Perth back to the bottom four sides.
Swan Districts and Subiaco played out an entertaining and high-quality affair at Steel Blue Oval with the Lions eventually prevailing by 48 points to snap their two-game losing run and also bring an end the run of eight straight wins by Swans.
It was a tremendously impressive performance by Subiaco who was without ruckman Frank Stockley for the entire second half and then the Lions also lost fellow big man Lachlan Delahunty late in the contest.
The Lions led for just about all the afternoon, though, despite suffering a real scare either side of three quarter-time.
Subiaco looked on target for the win in the third quarter with small forwards Shane Yarran, Chris Deluca, Rhys Waters and George Hampson coming to life with Swans dearly missing Kirk Ugle who went down injured early and also injured skipper Tallan Ames.
However, Ryan Davis and Tim Geappen then ensured that Swans would give it one more crack to win the game.
It was then 18 when Geappen kicked his fourth to open the final quarter, 11 when Davis added his fourth and just five when Davis added his fifth at the 15-minute mark.
Swan Districts had all the momentum at the stage and had an extra man in its rotation, but somehow and someway it was Subiaco who finished right over the top despite also having had just a five-day break compared to the seven for Swans.
Subiaco found a stunning last 15 minutes of the game to pile on seven goals in that time to end up winning by 48 points considering only 15 minutes before the siren it certainly appeared the Lions would be run over.
Matt Boland and Jason Bristow made the most of the run to finish the game with Boland booting three of his four goals for the day with Bristow also kicking two goals to go with his 23 possessions in the 100th WAFL match of his career after reaching the official 100-game mark on Monday.
As well as Boland's four goals, Yarran kicked four majors for the Lions with Waters adding three, Deluca three and Hampson two.
Captain Kyal Horsley racked up 27 possessions for Subiaco with Jarrod Kayler-Thomson finishing with 23 disposals, Hampson 23, Shaun Hildebrandt 22 and Clancy Wheeler 19 to go with 12 hit outs and a goal as he stood up in the absence of Stockley.
Davis and Geappen gave Swan Districts a chance with their efforts up forward with Davis finishing with 18 possessions and five goals, and Geappen 20 disposals, nine marks and four goals. Ricky Cary also kicked three.
Matt Riggio collected 27 possessions for the game with Aaron Elari finishing with 25 disposals, Blaine Boekhorst 22, Tony Notte 21 and Graham Jetta 20.
East Perth dominated Perth from the outset at Lathlain to end up winning by 80 points to move to the top of the WAFL ladder thanks to the percentage boost.
The Royals kicked four goals to two in the first quarter but then really put their foot down in the second piling on 10 goals to lead by 64 points at the main break before eight goals to six in the second half saw them win by 80.
Callum Sinclair was outstanding for East Perth with six goals to go with 21 possessions, 13 marks, 17 hit outs and six goals.
Ashley Smith also booted three goals for the Royals with Steven Payne, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Paul Johnson, Freddie Clutterbuck and, Scott Lycett all adding two apiece.
Meanwhile, Clutterbuck racked up 28 possessions, Brendan Lee 27, Payne 26, Dom Sheed 25, Will Magginness 23, Smith 21, Nathan Blee 20 and Patrick McGinnity 20.
Gerald Ugle kicked three goals for Perth and Paul Bevan two with Cale Morton collecting 26 possessions, Joel Leeson 20 and Matthew Hunt 19.
West Perth bounced back from a loss to East Perth on WA Day to set up a win over Claremont in the first three quarters, and then hold on despite a goalless final quarter to still win by nine points.
West Perth led all afternoon but it wasn’t without some heart flutters in the final quarter. The Falcons were in control at three quarter-time leading by 31 points having kicked four goals to one in the third term.
Claremont kicked the only four goals of the last quarter but West Perth still held on by nine points.
Nick Rodda, Kris Shannon, Anthony Tsalikis and Steven Browne all kicked two goals apiece for West Perth.
Rohan Kerr led the way for the Falcons with 32 possessions and a goal with Shane Nelson racking up 30 disposals, Aaron Black 29, Andrew Strijk 26, Jay van Berlo 23, Jordan Jones 19 and Jack Thrum 19.
Mark Seaby was Claremont's only multiple goal scorer with two to go with 15 possessions and 26 hit outs against a side he won a premiership with in 2003.
Claremont had 30 more possessions for the game than West Perth as well as more inside-50 entries with Luke Blackwell racking up 30 disposals, Corey Yeo 29, Ryan Neates 28, Matthew Davies 26, Jack Bradshaw 25, Sam Fong 24 and Andrew Foster 24.
Peel Thunder started brightly against East Fremantle with five goals to two in the first quarter to lead by 19 points at quarter-time, but the Sharks were back within seven by half-time.
East Fremantle then kicked five goals to three in the third term to lead by seven points heading into the final quarter where the Sharks booted five goals to two to end up winning by 25.
Brett Peake, Ryan Lester-Smith and Jayden Schofield all kicked three goals apiece for East Fremantle with Jack Perham adding two from 16 possessions and eight marks.
Former skipper Mark McGough was again outstanding for East Fremantle with 27 possessions with Cameron Eardley also having it 27 times, Rory O'Brien 24, Andrew Stephen 23, Brock O'Brien 23 and Sean Henson 20.
Anthony Morabito and Hayden Crozier were both outstanding for Peel with Morabito finishing with 28 possessions and three goals, and Crozier 27 disposals and two goals.
Colin Sylvia also kicked two goals for the Thunder with Jacob Ballard racking up another 31 possessions, Eddie Dann 27, Clancee Pearce 25, Cruize Garlett 21 and Matt Taberner 20 to go with seven marks and a goal.
