SWAN Districts won its eighth straight match to remain on top of the ladder coming from 37 points down to beat Perth by that same margin to open Round 10 WAFL action on Saturday at Lathlain Park.
Perth dominated periods of both the first and second quarters with Mitch Morton on fire kicking five first half goals, but Swan Districts worked its way on top and kicked nine straight goals either side of three quarter-time to end up winning 18.15 (123) to 13.8 (86).
The win means that Swans have now won eight straight games to remain clear on top of the WAFL ladder while Perth slips to a 3-6 record and face a big task to remain in the finals' hunt.
Even though Swan Districts did lose Aaron Elari to injury before half-time, Perth's cause of trying to win wasn’t helped with Jarrad Irons down in the game's opening minutes, Haydn Busher straining a hamstring in the third quarter and Michael Sinclair also coming off injured in the second half.
Tim Geappen was the star up forward for Swan Districts getting the better of his battle with Jarryd Morton and finishing with his best performance of the season with 20 possessions, 12 marks and six goals.
He had good support in the forward-line with Matthew Rogers ending up with 21 possessions, 10 marks and two goals, and Matthew Jukes two goals from 16 disposals.
That was despite Ryan Davis being held to just four possessions by Perth captain Paul Bevan and Ricky Cary kicking just one goal thanks to a good job by Perth full-back Chris Billings.
Tony Notte also worked hard at centre half-forward and helping in the ruck and ended up with 23 possessions, eight marks, 13 hit outs and a goal.
Blaine Boekhorst was outstanding through the middle for Swans backing up his tremendous first half of the season and terrific State game performance last week with 27 disposals, nine marks, nine inside 50s, four tackles and two goals.
Matt Riggio also gathered 23 disposals for Swans with Adam Faulkner picking up 18 touches as well in the middle.
Swans also had some good run and drive from defence with Graham Jetta finishing with 21 possessions and Kirk Ugle 18.
Aside from Jarryd Morton's struggles defensively on Geappen, Perth's back-line stood up well with Billings, Bevan and Jared Risol outstanding. Morton did do OK offensively, though, with 28 possessions and seven inside-50 entries.
Jarryd's older brother Mitch was outstanding in the first half kicking five goals for Perth with small forward Callum Collard returning to the side and booting two.
Through the middle, Matt Boyle picked up 26 possessions for Perth, Cameron Manuel 23, Dene White 22, Michael Florio 21, Kieran Hug 19 and Matthew Hunt 18.
Swan Districts dominated the first 10 minutes of the contest but couldn’t put a goal on the board. Meanwhile, Mitch Morton got his first of the afternoon and then by the time he booted his second at the 14-minute mark, Swans had wasted their chances with six behinds.
That signalled a run of five Perth goals in a 10-minute period and suddenly the Demons were 31 points to the good of Swan Districts and looking fantastic when Brennan Stack kicked truly at the 24-minute mark.
Swans eventually a got a goal on the board through former Demon Rogers at the 27-minute mark and then Geappen booted his first just before quarter-time to cut Perth's lead to 19 points at the first change.
Once again it was all Perth early in the second quarter as the Demons threatened to run away with the contest.
Mitch Morton added his fourth and fifth goals in quick succession and then when Manuel kicked truly 12 minutes into the second term, Perth was up by a game-high 37 points and with all momentum.
The familiar script followed, though, with Swan Districts steadying with Geappen booting his third and fourth goals of the afternoon, and then when second-gamer Josh Kirkup kicked truly the black-and-whites trailed by just 12 points at half-time.
Geappen kicked his fifth goal to open the second half to bring Swans back within just a goal before Perth big man Busher steadied his side with a goal at the 17-minute mark despite injuring his hamstring in the process.
It was all Swans from that point on, though, with the black-and-whites kicking the next nine goals straight to lead by 43 points, and end up winning by 37 after Michael Florio got a late consolation goal for Perth.
