Round 7 WAFL ResultsSaturday, May 3, 2014 - 9:21 PM - by Chris Pike

IT WAS a big day of WAFL football on Saturday with Swan Districts continuing its remarkable form handing Subiaco its first loss of 2014 with East Perth, South Fremantle and Perth the other Round 7 winners.

East Perth beat East Fremantle 11.9 (75) to 9.11 (65) at East Fremantle Oval, South Fremantle thrashed Claremont 17.13 (115) to 8.3 (51) at Fremantle Oval and Perth downed Peel Thunder 10.17 (77) to 6.12 (48) at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium.

Then in the twilight fixture at Leederville's Medibank Stadium that doubled as match of the round Swan Districts ran right over the top of Subiaco in the final quarter to win 19.13 (127) to 13.6 (84).

East Perth might have only ended up beating East Fremantle by 10 points in the finish, but the Royals were in control of the contest from the outset.

It was only a six-goal to nil final quarter that papered of the cracks for an East Fremantle team who were disappointing for the opening three quarters for the second straight week at home.

Back on Anzac Day, East Fremantle trailed South Fremantle by 46 points during the third quarter before getting to within 12 in the final term before losing by 17 points, but the two losses to the Bulldogs and Royals have both been disappointing efforts overall.

The final quarter fadeout was again a concern for the Royals as well, but they did control the game for three quarters leading by 50 points at three quarter-time.

Co-captain Brendan Lee made a terrific return for the Royals finishing with 32 possessions in his first game of the season while Steven Payne had 30 disposals, Patrick McGinnity 26, Sharrod Wellingham 25, Freddie Clutterbuck 23, Craig Wulff 23 and Dom Sheed 21.

Josh Hill and Fraser McInnes kicked three goals apiece for East Perth while Callum Sinclair booted two majors to go with 17 possessions, eight marks, 23 hit outs and two goals.

Brett Peake kicked four goals for East Fremantle with Bradd Dalziell racking up 36 possessions, Jamie McNamara 29, Rory O'Brien 28, Steven Dodd 24, Tom Howlett 22 and Jayden Schofield 21.

South Fremantle only led Claremont by 16 points at half-time at Fremantle Oval, but the Bulldogs then piled on 10 goals to three in the second half to end up winning by a comprehensive 64 points.

The Bulldogs have now won three straight matches after starting the season with four consecutive defeats.

It was also South Fremantle's first win over Claremont in the 10th attempt since 2009.

Claremont has won two games this year, but the losses against Perth, Subiaco, East Fremantle and now South Fremantle have come at an average of a massive 71 points.

South Fremantle's forward-line proved potent with Ben Saunders kicking four goals and two each to Craig White, Mitch Carter, Josh Pullman and Haiden Schloithe.

Jacob Martinez was best on ground, though, with 31 possessions, 13 marks, seven inside 50s and two goals.

Ryan Cook wasn’t far behind with 28 possessions while Adam Guglielmana racked up 27 disposals, Brendan Verrier 26, Steven Verrier 25, Ashton Hams 22, Toby Bairstow 20 and Shaun Bewick 20.

Despite being undersized against whichever Claremont ruckman was playing forward, Dylan Ross was outstanding against his former side with 24 possessions and 13 marks.

Brock Higgins also did well in the ruck up against Mark Seaby, Mitch Andrews and Darcy Cameron with 17 possessions and 20 hit outs.

Luke Blackwell worked hard for Claremont with 31 possessions with Mathew Aitchison collecting 25 disposals, Ryan Neates 23, Andrew Foster 22, Sam Fong 21, Matt Orzel 21 and Jack Bradshaw 19 to go with two goals.

Corey Yeo also did well limiting Schloithe to the 14 disposals.

Perth looked to be heading for a comfortable win over Peel keeping the Thunder to one first half goal and leading by 28 points at the main break.

However, Peel kicked the only four goals of the third quarter to suddenly be within a point, but the Demons then kicked 4.7 to 1.1 in the last term to run out 29-point winners to snap a three-game losing run.

The result means that Peel remains winless in 2014 and with the reserves and colts again losing, winless in all grades.

Veterans Matt Moody and Paul Bevan both kicked two goals apiece for Perth with Dene White racking up 30 possessions, Cale Morton 29, Cameron Manuel 25 and Mitch Morton 20.

Matt Brown and Kristin Thornton kicked two goals each for Peel with Brendon Jones gathering 29 possessions, Josh Mathers 28, Cruize Garlett 27, Jacob Ballard 26, Kepler Bradley 24, Garrick Ibbotson 23 and Dylan Winton 23.

The top-of-the-table clash at Medibank Stadium was a high-quality affair for three quarters with precious little separating Subiaco and Swan Districts.

The biggest margin between the two teams was a 15-point lead to Swan Districts but by three quarter-time, Swans led by just the three points with the game right up for grabs.

However the final quarter was all Swan Districts with the black-and-whites kicking the first seven goals of the term and then eight goals to two overall to end up running out 43-point winners.

The win means that Swans have now won five straight matches since a narrow loss to East Perth and it was the ideal way to celebrate the 200th appearance with Swan Districts for captain Tallan Ames and the 100th of premiership player Ryan Davis.

The loss is Subiaco's first of the season after beginning the season with five successive victories.

Matthew Jukes starred for Swan Districts with a career-best six goals while Matthew Rogers was again brilliant with three from 26 possessions and nine marks.

Tim Geappen, Ricky Cary and Davis all kicked two goals each for Swans as well.

Justin Simpson finished with 22 possessions, Matt Riggio 22, Graham Jetta 21, Aaron Elari 21 and Davis 20.

Shane Yarran kicked three goals for Subiaco with Matt Boland and Rhys Waters adding two apiece.

Jason Bristow gathered 26 possessions, Shaun Hildebrandt 25, Chris Phelan 24 and Kyal Horsley 22.
