Round 5 Sunday WAFL ResultsSunday, April 20, 2014 - 9:22 PM - by Chris Pike

SWAN Districts and Perth saved up the best for last in the Easter Round of WAFL football with Swans ending up thrilling one-point winners on Sunday over the Demons at Lathlain Park.

It was yet another thrilling contest between Swans and the Demons with the black-and-whites ending up back in front at the 26-minute mark of the final term thanks to a goal to Ryan Davis, and that was enough for them to hold on and win 14.8 (92) to 13.13 (91).

Swans and Perth played out two of the most exciting matches of 2013 with the Demons winning at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval by two points in Round 4 after a controversial 50-metre penalty before Swans responded with a four-point win at Lathlain in Round 11 when Brett Robinson kicked the winning goal.

And now in their first meeting of 2014, it was another classic contest between two teams who had made a good start to the season coming into the match.

It was Swan Districts who got off to a flying start with the first five goals of the match, but Perth did manage the last three goals of the first quarter to only trail by seven points at quarter-time.

Swans again had the better of the second term kicking three goals to one to lead by 18 points at the long break.

Perth had the advantage of a strengthening breeze in the third quarter and took advantage kicking six goals to just three from Swan Districts to hold the narrowest lead possible at the last change by a solitary point.

Perth did still manage three goals into the breeze in the final quarter and led by five points as time was beginning to run down, but Davis nailed his third goal of the afternoon at the 26-minute mark and that put Swans in front by a point, and that's what they ended up winning by.

As well as Davis kicking three goals from his 21 possessions, five tackles and four inside-50 entries, Tim Geappen and Ricky Cary both stepped up in the forward-line for Swans kicking three goals apiece.

Matthew Jukes and then again his former side, Matthew Rogers both added two goals apiece for the black-and-whites.

Adam Faulkner finished up with a game-high 30 possessions for Swan Districts while Blaine Boekhorst gathered 26 disposals, Travis Casserly 25, Justin Simpson 25, Aaron Elari 23, Kirk Ugle 22, Jarrad Blight 21, Connor Blakely 21 and Nathan Blakely 20 to go with 23 hit outs.

Matt Moody returned to the Perth line-up after missing the last two games with a rib injury and he kicked three goals with captain Paul Bevan adding two to go with 19 possessions, nine marks and six inside 50s.

Sean Lynch made a terrific debut for Perth having crossed from South Fremantle in the off-season and finished with a team-high 26 possessions.

Jarryd Morton also gathered 25 disposals for the Demons, Michael Florio 24, Mitch Morton 23, Gerald Ugle 23, Dene White 20 and ruckman Ben Power 19 to go with 27 hit outs, six marks, five tackles and a goal in his league debut in the absence of Mitchell Lleyendekkers.

The win means that Swans have now won three straight matches since an opening round game loss to East Perth so the black-and-whites improve to a 3-1 record while the Demons slip to 2-2 having now lost two straight following opening the season with consecutive victories.
