Good Friday WAFL ResultsFriday, April 18, 2014 - 10:01 PM - by Chris Pike

OVER 5000 fans turned out to support Good Friday WAFL football with two games played with Subiaco beating East Perth and East Fremantle defeating Peel Thunder.

The Good Friday WAFL action began at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium with Peel and East Fremantle fighting out a contest that had little separating the teams most of the day, but the Sharks ended up prevailing 12.14 (86) to 10.8 (68).

Meanwhile at Leederville's Medibank Stadium, a terrific crowd of 3440 turned out as a game of fluctuating fortunes ended with Subiaco beating East Perth 16.10 (106) to 12.10 (82).

The early game was played in Mandurah with Peel hosting East Fremantle for a second straight Good Friday contest between the two teams.

The Sharks booted the first two goals of the game to open up a handy advantage and even though Peel did hit the front briefly just before half-time, it was East Fremantle in control virtually all afternoon.

The Sharks were back in front by four points at half-time and then kicked four goals to one with the advantage of the breeze to lead by 23 points at three quarter-time, and then run out relatively comfortable 18-point victors.

The win means that East Fremantle has won three of its opening four games to start the season while Peel remains now winless from four matches.

Bradd Dalziell was once again outstanding for East Fremantle and he spent most of the game across half-forward finishing up with 25 possessions and two goals. Jack Perham also booted two goals for the Sharks.

Brock O'Brien provided huge run off half-back and picked up a team-high 29 possessions with his older brother Rory picking up 28 disposals Andrew Stephen 24, Cameron Eardley 24, Sean Henson 23, Brett Peake 23 and Jamie McNamara 20.

There were three Fremantle ruckmen lining up for Peel with Craig Moller spending most of the game forward and kicking three goals with Jack Hannath the pick of them with 18 possessions, seven marks, 11 hit outs and a goal. Jonathon Griffin finished with 30 hit outs.

Tom Sheridan was terrific all day for Peel racking up 32 possessions while former skipper Brendon Jones had 29 touches, Garrick Ibbotson 24, Anthony Morabito 19 and Matt Brown 19 to go with two goals.

Alex Silvagni had a good game in defence for the Thunder as well while Jacob Ballard was impressive gathering 25 possessions.

Peel's cause wasn’t helped when key defender and former Brisbane Lions AFL player James Hawksley went down with a hamstring injury before half-time.

Meanwhile at Medibank Stadium, Subiaco got off to a hot start against East Perth in the battle of the co-tenants.

With the Royals coming off a 100-point loss to West Perth just a week after beating South Fremantle by 75 points, Subiaco put the hammer down with the only six goals of the first quarter.

The Lions' lead stretched out to 44 points early in the second quarter, but East Perth then woke up and trailed by just 11 points by half-time.

The Royals then kicked another six goals to two in the third quarter to secure a 59-point turnaround in less than two quarters to open up what seemed a potentially match-winning 15-point three quarter-time advantage.

However, Subiaco then hit back and kept East Perth to just the one behind for all of the last quarter and kicked six goals itself to end up prevailing by 24 points.

The result means that Subiaco remain on top of the WAFL ladder and the only unbeaten team in the competition with five straight wins while East Perth has now lost two straight after winning its first three of 2014.

George Hampson continued his career-best form for Subiaco with another best on ground performance with 24 possessions and five goals. Matt Boland also added four goals from seven kicks for the Lions.

Jason Bristow also collected 21 possessions, Lachlan Delahunty 21, Kyal Horsley 20, Chris Phelan 19 and Frank Stockley 17 to go with 22 hit outs and a goal while up against Scott Lycett, Callum Sinclair and Paul Johnson.

Lycett finished with five goals from 15 touches, eight marks and 12 hit outs for the Royals with Sinclair spending the majority of the time in the ruck and ending up with 20 disposals, nine marks and 12 hit outs.

Craig Wulff once again led the way for East Perth with another 25 possessions and two goals with Nathan Blee gathering 25 disposals, Blayne Wilson 24, Sam Butler 27 and Brant Colledge 26.
