Female Football a highlight of Nicky Winmar CarnivalWednesday, March 5, 2014 - 10:21 AM

If the crowd roar is testament to an exciting game, the message was clear - the Indigenous All Star Selection Match was one of the highlights of the Nicky Winmar Carnival.

Loud gasps and cheers could be heard as girls showcased their skills and courage in a fierce exhibition match between North and South at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Sunday.

The players were very aware that in the stands, a high profile selection panel observed, tasked with the hard decision to elevate only 24 girls into the Indigenous All Star team.

Former Docker defender, Antoni Grover, Richmond great and Sandover Medallist Michael Mitchell and South Fremantle Assistant Coach, Michelle Cowan overlooked what was a skilful, explosive, and intense display. The players put their bodies on the line, chased hard and subjected their opponents to immense pressure in determined efforts to be selected in the Indigenous All Star Team.

Michael Mitchell, known for his ferocity and hard hitting in his tenure at Richmond said after the game it was one of the best he’d seen in terms of continuous passages of accurate play.

"The tackling reminded me of old school football where guys went hard and risked it all to get the ball,” he said.

In talks after the game Antoni Grover also expressed he thoroughly enjoyed the match, stating “The skills, talent and intensity was sensational.”

The Indigenous All Star Team will play in a reconciliation match against the WA Women’s Football League All Stars known as ‘Yorga’s Koodjal Kadajiny’ which means women’s two way learning match and is an important fixture in the WAWFL season calendar.

‘Yorga’s Koodjal Kadajiny’ will be played at 2:30pm on June 1 at Lathlain Park, Lathlain. For a full background on the event please visit www.wawfl.com.au
