Record number of WA umpires selected for AFL finalsThursday, September 5, 2013 - 11:05 AM

A RECORD number of WA umpires have been appointed to officiate in AFL Finals this weekend, with six named across three games.

WAFL Umpire Manager Darryl Sinclair said this was an outstanding result for WA umpiring and congratulated each of the umpires on their achievement.

“It’s a real testament to the dedication of these umpires and great reward for the hard work they have put into umpiring through the WAFL and then into the AFL,” he said.

“There has never been three WA-based field umpires appointed to AFL finals before. If you also include Brett Rosebury, who is originally from WA but no longer based here, there are four, which is just outstanding.”

WAFC General Manager of Pathways and Competitions, Steve Hargrave, echoed Sinclair’s comments and said the result was testament to the vibrant and healthy talent pathway for umpires.

“The dedication and effort of all junior umpiring staff within the District Model is key to this success and I congratulate all of them in their efforts in growing umpiring and ensuring ongoing development,” he said.

“The role that our umpire coaches play in nurturing talent through the green shirt program and Umpiring Talent Squads is just fantastic.”
