A gallant Peel Thunderbirds went down by a solitary point to South Fremantle in the West Australian Football Commission Youth Girls Grand Final on Sunday the 25th August.
In what was a hard fought see-sawing game in wet conditions, the Peel team showed plenty of fight and tenacity to lead by 4 points at 3 quarter time.
South Fremantle came out after the break to kick 2 quick goals, whilst Peel regrouped and continued to show excellent teamwork and run to get within 1 point with about a minute to go in the game. However, the Bulldogs were able to withstand the late challenge to run out 2013 Rogers Cup Premiers.
Beatrice Devlyn, from South Fremantle, was awarded Best on Ground in the Grand Final for an outstanding game, and best players for the Thunderbirds were Sabrina Duffy, Madison Websdale, Ashley Chaffer and Talya Marshall.
The game, highlighted by some hard running and excellent skills in what were blustery conditions, was the culmination of the inaugural WAFC Youth Girls competition.
WAFC Female Football Coordinator Allana Dickie, who was instrumental in the establishment and management of the competition, stated after the game “that the skills on display today, and throughout the entire 10 week competition, from all teams involved, were outstanding and through the establishment of this competition, it will ultimately help maintain a strong pathway for females in the game”.
