Jacob Farrow became the first West Aussie picked in the top-10 of the Telstra AFL Draft in two years after Essendon swooped with pick 10.
The gun West Perth defender was the lone WA talent snapped up on night one of the draft at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, capping off a remarkable rise for the hard-running left-footer.
The Under-18s All-Australian, who also played senior WAFL footy for the Falcons this year, became the first top-10 pick from WA since Claremont’s Daniel Curtin (pick eight to Adelaide) in 2023.
Farrow will link up with his former West Perth teammate and fellow WA under-18s representative Kayle Gerreyn who was drafted to the Bombers in last year’s national draft.
“I just cannot wait to get stuck into it, really,” Farrow said.
“I wouldn’t have had any hard feelings about any of the teams that I landed at but stoked to be at the Bombers.
“I knew they were in my range, their picks, so it was on the cards. And got my name read out by them.”
WA Football’s State Talent Manager Adam Jones congratulated Farrow on his selection after putting in plenty of hard work to catch the eye of AFL recruiters.
“Jacob wasn’t named in our Summer Squad last year but took it upon himself to hire a sprint coach and improve the areas he needed to,” Jones said.
“He came back in fantastic shape, picked up a yard of pace, and then just went from strength to strength throughout the year, earning a spot in our State 18s squad where he was one of three All-Australians from WA.
“He continued to rise up the draft boards which is a credit to his work ethic and drive to get to where he is today.”
The Telstra AFL National Draft continues on Thursday afternoon from 4pm WST before the week wraps up with the Rookie Draft from 12.20pm WST on Friday.
There’s plenty of WA talent in the mix to go on the second night of the draft including West Perth ball magnet Sam Swadling, State 18s skipper and South Fremantle midfielder Fred Rodriguez, Claremont swingman Cody Curtin, silky-skilled Swan Districts forward Tylah Williams and West Coast father-son Charlie Banfield from Claremont.
