Peel Football Netball League are the early Division One pace-setters after a strong start to their Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships senior campaign at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Friday.
The Cavaliers won both of their opening-day clashes including a thrilling victory over reigning champions South West, prevailing by seven points with a perfect 9.0 (54) to their opponents’ 7.5 (47).
Laine Wilkins kicked three majors in the win, while former Thunder pair Lachie Cullen and Kaine Ah Chee also did their bit, with ex-Dockers defender Jason Carter the SWFL’s best and Zag Trigwell (three goals) the main focal point forward.
Earlier in the day, Peel knocked off Goldfields by 23 points with former WAFL gun Michael Randall dominant in the midfield.
The GFL won the opening game of the day in fine fashion, beating Great Northern by 61 points with recruit Dustin Walters booting four goals and former Perth Demons star and Fremantle train-on Sam Stubbs adding three, while speedster Richard Bourne was excellent through the middle.
Stubbs, who recently retired from the WAFL, got to play alongside his brothers and fellow ex-Demons Ben and Daniel in a nice family moment.
In other Division One results, South West defeated Avon by 24 points with East Fremantle premiership hero and ex-Richmond rookie Luke English among the standouts.
Avon also recorded a win after beating the GNFL by 21 points with former St Kilda and Claremont spearhead Tom Lee kicking a game-high five goals including four in a half.
Central Midlands Coastal finished day one at HIF Health Insurance Oval at Joondalup atop the Division Two ladder with two victories from as many starts and a whopping percentage of 300.
Great Southern are also undefeated in the second division after am impressive string of performances, highlighted by a two-point upset victory over Upper Great Southern.
Subiaco premiership forward Rhys Waters finished the day with a division-high four majors for the CMCFL with Cervantes midfielder Gus Devitt another big contributor.
‘Uppers’ and Eastern Districts have one win apiece.
In Division Three, Central Wheatbelt lead the way with a 2-0 start and a staggering percentage of 525 at Gil Fraser Reserve in North Fremantle.
Former Subiaco ruckman Jake South has 12 majors in two games including nine in the 83-point thrashing of North Midlands.
Ex-Fremantle and Gold Coast livewire Brandon Matera added seven across the two games including a best-afield four-goal effort in the 53-point win over Esperance.
Lower South West also had an unblemished day one with wins over North Midlands (80 points) and Mortlock (12 points).
Senior action continues on Saturday with Division One matches at Mandurah’s Lane Group Stadium, Division Two at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and Division Three at HIF Health Insurance Oval in Joondalup before finals day at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Sunday.
