WA Clinches Win Over Vic MetroMonday, July 7, 2025 - 12:04 PM

WA has survived a thriller against Vic Metro to record their first triumph at the Marsh AFL National Championships – U18 Girls at The Good Grocer Park yesterday.

In what was a physical game in trying conditions, WA scrambled to a four-point result in a match which produced drama in the dying moments.

Victoria had the chance to win the game after the final siren but the shot by Bailee Martin from a difficult angle missed, producing celebrations in the WA camp.

Beau McDonald, State Talent Coach - Female Pathways at WA Football, believes the victory was set up early in the game.

“We had the wind against us for the first quarter and gave a terrific defensive effort to limit Victoria’s scoring,” McDonald said.

“The rest of the game was an arm wrestle, and we were able to get one against the wind in the third quarter.”

The low scoring affair was dominated by contested possessions, with WA laying an incredible 109 tackles for the day.

The WA win was their first against Vic Metro in five years.

“It was a very excited group post-game especially after losing a close one to QLD in Round 1 of the Championships,” he said.

In what was a strong team performance, WA’s better players included Mia Russo, Cara Dziegielewski, Juliet Kelly, Alicia Blizard, Sienna Timmermans and Hiedi Ireland, while Renee Morgan and Mel Grage also earned praise from McDonald.

WA’s next opponents are the Allies in NSW on Saturday, July 19.
