The New Holland WA Women’s State Country side prevailed over Perth Football League in a one-point thriller at Gosnells Oval on Friday night.
In another epic clash following on from last year’s draw, the WA Country held their nerve to win 4.4 (28) to 4.3 (27).
Donnybrook star Ella Smith was named best on ground after an outstanding performance.
Fellow former West Coast player Kate Bartlett, now playing for Secret Harbour in the Peel league, booted two of her side’s four goals – both in the first half.
Country led at every change before withstanding a late charge from the PFL to hang on for a memorable win, with their back six getting plenty of praise from coach Rennie Meadmore post-match.
“I couldn't fault a backman all night, they got hammered and constantly kept coming out on top,” Meadmore said.
“Olivia Bidwell, Kloe Basset, Beth Beckett, and Kat Slattery all also had amazing games. But in all honesty, it was a team win!”
Meadmore was proud of her team’s efforts to hang on after splitting the points with the PFL last year.
“I’m so proud. It was an experience i won't forget,” Meadmore said.
“The fact we got 24 hours together and play like we did is just unreal.
“The girls bought into the whole experience and game plan. And played it well, which is incredible when they dont even know how one and other play.”
Meadmore said former AFLW player and Dhara Kerr medallist Smith’s game was “amazing”.
“Ella was amazing and stood up when we needed it,” she said.
