Fresh off an historic State Game win for WA, footy in Western Australia returned to usual programming, with some fascinating results, incredible individual performances and spectacular highlight reels.
Relive the weekend that was in the WAFL below!
Perth 12.8 (80) v Peel Thunder 5.10 (40)
Mid-season draft nominees Brandon Parfitt and Lochlan Paton were instrumental in Perth’s comfortable victory against the reigning premiers on Saturday afternoon, gathering 30 disposals and booting four goals respectively to boost their stocks ahead of Wednesday night’s AFL Draft.
Peel kicked five behinds in the opening quarter which put them behind the eight-ball and were never able to mount a comeback.
Perth sealed the win with a seven goal to two second half to establish their spot in the top five through seven rounds.
Charlie Constable led the way in a dominant display with 36 disposals and seven tackles, while Michael Randall, Matthew Taylor and Corey Byrne also impressed.
Blake Schlensog added four goals, and Jed Kemp also kicked multiple majors.
Fremantle listed players Will Brodie (20 disposals, five tackles, two goals) and Liam Reidy (13 disposals, 48 hit outs) were among the best for the Thunder, as were James Aish and Michael Sellwood, the latter having done absolutely no harm to his own Mid-Season Draft stocks.
Peel slipped to seventh on the ladder, with the third-worst percentage of any club in the competition.
East Fremantle 12.10 (82) v East Perth 9.8 (62)
The Sharks won their fifth consecutive game to remain tied first on the ladder on points, taking 97 marks as a team, far more than any other club over the weekend.
East Fremantle won the inside 50s despite losing the clearance battle, and the eight leading mark-takers were all Sharks as they possessed the football impressively despite damp conditions.
Zachary Rankin was at the forefront, taking 10 marks to go with 19 disposals and two goals, while Jack Cleaver (29 touches, seven marks, eight tackles, one goal) was dominant.
Regular contributors Cameron Eardley, Kyle Baskerville and Tom Joyce were brilliant, as were Cody Leggett, James Spadanuda and Griffin Vladich, the latter booting a team high three goals in his WAFL League debut.
Leggett moved into third in the Bernie Naylor medal race, while Sebit Kuek’s
three goals kept him in the running as well.
The Royals, despite Scott Jones, Tom North and Angus Scott all playing great football, dropped their first game since Round 4.
South Fremantle 18.14 (122) v Subiaco 2.7 (19)
Subiaco’s issues went from bad to worse over the weekend, dropping to less than 59% on the ladder in a 103-point thumping.
The Lions managed just two goals, one in each half, while the Bulldogs piled on 12 in the first and fourth quarters alone.
Jake Florenca led all ball-winners, amassing 35 disposals, laying six tackles and kicking a goal, while Matthew Parker kicked 1.4 from 30 disposals, nine tackles and seven marks.
Tom Blechynden, Isiah Winder and Matthew Ward were all fantastic, as was former North Melbourne ruckman Hamish Free, who won 60 hit outs.
Mid-Season Draft prospect Jaxon Artemis, a former Western Australian Under 16s state MVP, collected 20 disposals and took seven marks in his best League game to date.
Trey Ruscoe took full advantage of South’s dominance, kicking five goals and taking his season total to 24, whilst Brandon Donaldson and Dylan Main combined to boot seven more.
Liam Hickmott and Greg Clark battled hard on a rough day for Subiaco, collectively posting 50 disposals and 23 tackles.
The Bulldogs sit first on the WAFL table through seven rounds.
Claremont 11.10 (76) v Swan Districts 4.10 (34)
A much younger looking black and white outfit took the field at Steel Blue Oval, as Swan Districts went down to the Tigers.
Swans have struggled to find avenues to goal without Tom Edwards this year, and without Leigh Kohlmann up forward they managed just four goals for the day.
Jye Chalcraft stood tall, as did Ayden Cartwright in his return to the League side, gathering 23 disposals, taking eight marks and kicking a goal.
Mid-Season Draft prospect Oliver Eastland enhanced his prospects ahead of Wednesday night’s AFL Draft, posting 14 disposals, 47 hit outs, four tackles and three goals.
Outside of Eastland the Tigers had eight separate goalkickers, while the stars showed out, Sandover Medallists Bailey Rogers (32 disposals, six marks, one goal), Jye Bolton (30 disposals, five marks) and Callan England (22 disposals, four marks) leading the way.
West Perth 17.10 (112) v West Coast 8.7 (55)
A wet and rainy Saturday night at Joondalup made it tough for the Eagles’ tall fowards, who were up and about early against the Falcons.
In the opening stages of the game West Perth had no answer for West Coast’s tall forwards, though West Coast similarly could not stop Tyler Keitel at the other end.
Once the rain came down though, and it came down hard, at quarter time, the Falcons adjusted to the wet weather footy much better than the visitors.
Keitel ended with six goals to cement his clear lead in the Bernie Naylor Medal race, while WA state representative Joseph Hinder booted three from the wing.
Shane Nelson had 22 first half possessions and finished the game with 35 despite a tag, while Mid-Season Draft nominee Kane Bevan gathered 29 disposals.
Harley Sparks was the best of the Eagles, while Coen Livingstone and Jack Williams impressed up forward.
