Subiaco’s quest to claim a maiden WAFLW Premiership will hinge largely on the contribution of star forward Olivia Wolmarans this season.
The Lions have made a promising start to their WAFLW campaign winning their opening three matches, including a 24 point victory over Swan Districts on Saturday and Wolmarans has played a major role in their early success.
The 17 year-old was a stand out performer in the season opener against West Perth kicking four goals and collecting 18 disposals.
Three of her goals came in the opening quarter.
“Our first three games have been really exciting ,” Wolmarans said.
“All of us know we have a job to do this year and we have a strong team that can do it.
“I am happy with how I have started the season but still need to work on a few things and there’s always room for improvement.”
Yet to win a WAFLW flag, Wolmarans believes Subiaco has the squad to challenge in 2025.
“We have a very strong side this season and a very good coach in Baker Denneman,” she said.
“The girls worked really hard in pre-season and we smashed out the scratch matches and that has translated into winning form.
“I definitely think we have a realistic shot at winning the flag this season and we deserve it from all our hard work and dedication we have put in over the years.”
The athletic key forward is considered a strong top 20 prospect at this year AFLW Draft, but Wolmarans is looking no further than success at Subiaco.
“For me WAFLW is the priority and National Academy duties, then later my State season,” Wolmarans said.
“Then I will think about getting drafted.
“I just love playing the game and believe in everything will fall in place, if I keep the right mindset and priorities.
“I’m ready for whatever comes my way and I don’t mind moving over east.
“It’s been my dream ever since I was little to get drafted, so I don’t mind wherever AFLW takes me.”
Despite being on the cusp of an AFLW career, Wolmarans has revealed her mother tried to guide her in a different sporting direction.
“Mum played about 30 matches for the South African Proteas netball team,” she said.
“The highlight of her career was when she represented her country at both U21 and Senior World Cup Championships.
“She tried to convince me to play netball but it was not physical enough for me, so I preferred rugby and footy.
Subiaco is grateful for the choice Olivia made.
