Junior Girls season a great successWednesday, July 17, 2013 - 11:25 AM

The inaugural Junior Girls football season concluded this month and the nine teams involved couldn’t be happier.

Four football Districts - South Fremantle, Perth, Swan Districts and East Perth were involved in this innovative competition for girls in Years 4-7.

Teams were drawn from Jandakot, Coolbinia, Thornlie, Bassendean, Armadale, Morley, Manning and Lesmurdie.

Over 110 girls and their parents were hooked on the season from week one, as they finally had a competition they could call their own.

South Fremantle District Development Officer Louise McKenry was awestruck with the talent on show in the games she watched.

"I couldn’t believe how the girls improved from Round One to Round Seven. The skill levels and competitive approach were exceptional and I saw lots of little (State Player) Chelsea Randalls running around out there!" McKenry said.

A definite highlight of the season was the involvement of four teams in the half-time AFL game between West Coast and Essendon on June 27.

"Wow, what an experience the kids had playing half time at the game. They were grinning from ear to ear the whole time we were at the stadium," said one parent of the night.

"The whole experience was one that they, and me for that matter, will never forget".

A number of other junior clubs have already enquired about how they can be involved in the 2014 season.

The Junior Girls competition promises to grow quickly, right across the Perth metropolitan area, in order to satisfy the huge demand from the number of girls wanting a ‘fair-dinkum’ football experience.
