Emerging Talent on Show at Nicky Winmar and Kirby Bentley CupMonday, October 7, 2024 - 2:12 PM

More than 230 players aged between 13 and 15 will take over UWA Sports Park this Sunday for the Nicky Winmar Carnival and Kirby Bentley Cup.

Six teams will compete in the Nicky Winmar Carnival, an 18-a-side competition, while six teams will compete in a revised nine-a-side Kirby Bentley Cup.

Naomi Baker, Programs Officer at the West Australian Football Commission, confirmed 150 male players are set to play on the day along with 80 female participants.

The carnival seeks to engage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth in the community, offering them a platform to showcase their skills, celebrate their culture, and connect with talent pathways, while also encouraging them to stay involved in WA football,” Baker said.

The event also provides players with the chance to mix with players from higher levels of football.

“This year we have players from the WAFL and WAFL Women’s coaching teams, which allows participants to connect with current players in our state competitions and gain valuable insight on what the future could look like for them,” Baker said.

With the Nicky Winmar Carnival established in 2007 and the Kirby Bentley Cup in 2014, these events are now building a rich history and tradition.

Entry to the event is free.
