WA set to bounce back from first Championships GameTuesday, August 6, 2024 - 11:46 AM

WA battled hard against Queensland but ultimately came up short in their first match for the AFL National Championships – U18s Girls.

Despite being without some of their leaders due to injury, the Black Swans came out firing early with two first quarter goals to Noa McNaughton and Alicia Blizard.

The side faced an uphill battle from there.

While Queensland played their third and final match for the Championships against WA, the Black Swans were playing their first match.

Trent Cooper, WAFC Manager Female Talent Programs said the team have a week to finesse their game structure prior to their second match against Victoria Country in Melbourne on Sunday.

“We came up against a team in Queensland who were playing in their final game, and they definitely looked the more cohesive unit,” Cooper said.

Despite the loss, Cooper highlighted several positives for the side.

“That hit-out under pressure will stand us in good stead and we expect our group to improve through the Championships.

“There were periods of the game that we played it on our terms but couldn’t capitalise and Queensland made the most of their opportunities.”

WA restricted Queensland in the marking contest 47-34 and the Black Swans came close to matching their rivals in the hit-outs 25-28.

“Our rucks battled hard against quality opposition, and we managed to win the clearance count (25-23) on the back of their good work,” Cooper said.

“A couple of our forwards in Noa McNaughton and Alicia Blizard worked hard all day and had moments where they displayed their talent.”

WA had 26 more tackles than their opponents, Natasha Entwistle led the way with eight tackles, teammate Renee Morgan (seven tackles) and Dakota Sexton six tackles.

Cooper said the team has some work to do prior to their next match on Sunday.

“We wanted to kick the ball more, but we had almost as many handballs as kicks so will work on ways to change that during the week,” Cooper said.

“Our backs will work on their defensive positioning and the forwards will be using their speed and athleticism to keep the ball in our front half when we do lose possession.”

WA’s next game is against Vic Country on Sunday at RSEA Park, Victoria from 10.15am AWST and is available on live-stream via AFL.com.au.
