As junior football finals draw closer, it becomes an exciting time for players, coaches, parents, and volunteers.
The stakes are high, and the passion for the game is at its peak.
However, it’s crucial to remember that the spirit of football goes beyond the field; it extends to the sidelines as well.
As excitement builds and tensions rise, the WA Football Commission (WAFC) is encouraging everyone involved in the game about the importance of good sideline behaviour.
“Poor sideline behaviour can have far-reaching impacts on the game and everyone involved,” WAFC Head of Competitions Bradd Gardiner said.
“Negative comments, aggressive outbursts, and disrespect towards opposing teams and officials can create a hostile environment that affects the players' performance and enjoyment of the game.
“Umpires and officials play a crucial role in ensuring the game is fair and enjoyable for everyone.
“Respecting their decisions, even when they may not go in your favour, sets a positive example for young players and teaches them about sportsmanship.”
SportWest earlier this year launched a campaign to tackle poor sideline behaviour: There’s no place for poor sideline behaviour. Let us play! which serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining a respectful and supportive environment at our games.
This initiative is a call to action for everyone involved in the game – players, coaches, parents, and volunteers – to uphold the values of respect, fairness, and sportsmanship.
