EAST Fremantle will now enter the 2024 WAFLW grand final on a 12-game winning streak after winning a thriller over Claremont to open the finals series with West Perth also staying alive.
It was a semi-final double-header at Pentanet Stadium on Sunday to open the finals series for 2024 and by the end of the afternoon, East Fremantle was into the grand final, Swan Districts' season was over and Claremont and West Perth were booked into the preliminary final.
The action got underway with West Perth taking part in its first ever WAFLW final in its third season in the competition and doing so on home turf at Pentanet Stadium.
The Falcons would go on to score the impressive 11.4 (70) to 4.2 (26) victory against Swan Districts to book in a place in the preliminary final while ending the season of Swans.
West Perth kicked the only three goals of the second quarter and only four of the last to set up the 44-point victory with Erin O'Brien kicking four goals and Imahra Cameron two against her former team to go with 21 possessions.
Kaitlyn Roper also had 23 possessions in the win for the Falcons, Taylor Ferguson 21, Bianca Webb 18, Mia Russo 17 and Emily Bennett 16.
Sienna Pollard kicked two goals for Swan Districts with Kayley King picking up 15 possessions, Lily Paterson 15 and Pollard 13.
That led into the second semi-final between East Fremantle and Claremont with the two teams renewing their remarkable rivalry that saw them play in the past two grand finals for a premiership each.
East Fremantle came into the game having won the last 11 games of the season to finish clear on top and the Sharks did lead by as much as 13 points after kicking the first two goals, and still by nine at three quarter-time.
However, Claremont kicked the only goal of the last quarter thanks to Eva O'Donnell to set up the thrilling finish with the Sharks holding on to win 4.7 (31) to 4.4 (28) and advance to a third straight grand final.
East Fremantle's goals came from Siena Jezierski-Brown, Chloe Reilly, Sharon Wong and Emmelie Fielder with Wong picking up 17 possessions, Tiana Teakle 17, Zippy Fish 17 and Chloe Wrigley 16 to go with 10 tackles.
Claremont will now host West Perth in the preliminary final after Adele Arnup, Rachel Ortlepp, O'Donnell and Bec Anderson kicked a goal each.
Jayme Harken finished with 30 possessions for the Tigers, Sarah Viney 20 (eight tackles), Juliet Kelly 20 and Kate Orme 16.
