WAFL Round 10 RecapMonday, June 10, 2024 - 11:28 AM - by Chris Pike

CLAREMONT gritted its teeth to end the winning run in the WAFL of East Perth on Sunday to be knocking on the door of the top five with Subiaco getting back to winning and East Fremantle producing a remarkable second half against West Perth.

Coming off a massive WA Day long weekend of WAFL action, Peel Thunder, Perth, South Fremantle and Swan Districts had a bye in Round 10, but the three matches that did take place across Saturday and Sunday were fascinating.

The lone match on Saturday took place at Sullivan Logistics Stadium and Subiaco was able to snap a five-game losing slide with the 16.16 (112) to 6.11 (47) win against the West Coast Eagles.

Liam Hickmott delivered a best on ground performance for the Lions with 32 possessions, nine tackles, seven marks and two goals in the drought breaking win to keep them in the finals hunt.

Then on Sunday afternoon, it was a tough and tenacious Claremont performance in the wintry conditions who knocked off the league-leading East Perth 9.5 (59) to 6.14 (50) also at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

Dual Sandover Medallist Jye Bolton was outstanding for the Tigers with 37 possessions and his hard running to set up Tyron Smallwood for the late goal sealed the win to make it back-to-back wins as the Royals remain top despite their five-game winning run ending.

East Fremantle's premiership defence was hanging by a thread after a one-goal first half against West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday afternoon.

However, the Sharks then turned it on remarkably in the second half on their adopted home with 11 goals to one in the second half to end up beating the Falcons 12.10 (82) to 5.10 (40).

Ben McGuire returned to kick three goals in the win for East Fremantle while dual Simpson Medallist Milan Murdock racked up 30 possessions.
