PERTH and East Perth are creating an ANZAC Day tradition that continues with a twilight fixture between the Demons and Royals to begin Round 5 of the WAFL on Thursday.
Perth will play host to East Perth to open Round 5 on Thursday from 4.10pm to commemorate ANZAC Day with both teams bringing good early season form into the match up at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park.
Both teams are coming off the bye last weekend leading into the twilight Thursday match up and sit on 2-1 records heightening the stakes for the ANZAC Day contest between the two old rivals.
It will be the 10th time in the past 12 seasons that the Demons and Royals have been able to play as traditional rivals to commemorate ANZAC Day, and this could well be the most fascinating of any of those contests.
There's excitement building at Perth with Peter German in his second season as coach with the Demons having won two of their first three games with the victories against Subiaco and Swan Districts.
East Perth did win its first two games of the season but had a slip up before the bye against Peel Thunder meaning both teams come into the ANZAC Day match up at 2-1.
Reigning Sandover Medallist and East Perth captain Hamish Brayshaw is looking forward to the ANZAC Day occasion and to take on an improving Perth team, including former teammate Charlie Constable.
"It's a great day and my brother is still serving in the army so it's close to us," Brayshaw said.
"It's awesome to be playing Thursday afternoon under lights, it's going to be pretty special.
"Perth have got a couple of good players in and now they have a bit of go about them, and they are 2-1 like we are and it's certainly not the walkover against them it once was.
"They've got some quality in each line and are playing with a bit of urgency, which is good for the comp."
The other two Round 5 match ups in the WAFL to commemorate ANZAC Day take place over the weekend beginning with West Perth playing South Fremantle on Saturday at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium.
Swan Districts will then be celebrating their 90-year anniversary on Sunday hosting the reigning premier East Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval.
