WA has named a 26-player squad to take part in next month’s Under 16s National Championships in Victoria and South Australia.

Western Australia will face the Gold Coast on April 7 in Melbourne, followed by a showdown with South Australia in Adelaide on April 14.

Since the first squad intake was announced earlier this month, the players have been put through four weeks of training sessions, gym work, education, and a jumper presentation to prepare for the challenge ahead.

Elly Lambkin, Talent Specialist – Female Programs at the West Australian Football Commission is optimistic about the potential of the squad.

“Competing in the AFLW National Championships is an exciting prospect and another opportunity to show the WA run and flare,” Lambkin said.

“The purpose of the 16s program is to provide an opportunity for players to experience elements of a High-Performance Environment including travel, recovery, and professional standards of training.

“As part of the development focused program, players are introduced to habits and skills they will need to embrace to realise their potential as athletes. 

Lambkin is impressed by the spread of talent and the diversity in the squad.

“The makeup of the squad has representation from all 9 WAFL clubs and 25% of players are first nations players,” she said.

“It’s also exciting to see that the majority of the players are turning 16 years old this year, while still providing an opportunity for a handful of younger players to experience state level football.

Back-to-back matches on the road will provide extra challenges for the group.

”Having both of the Championship games played over east on consecutive weekends, the team will have to manage recovery and performance to get the results we’re chasing, “Lambkin said.

Many members of the coaching group have AFLW experience which will be invaluable, according to Lambkin.

“Belinda Smith, current WCE defender, will be imparting her knowledge to our young backliners.

“Emily Bonser, former Docker, Eagle and current Claremont midfielder, will be taking the midfield.

“Tiah Toth, former Fremantle, and current Subiaco player will be working with the forward line.

“Aimee Schmidt, recently retired Eagles forward and Subiaco player, adds a specialised tall perspective to the team

“Led by former Eagles AFLW assistant coach and currently working with Subiaco WAFLW league team, Pia Faletti, the female coaching pathway has an exciting future with these women leading the way at state level.”
