Youth Girls Competition kicks off with successFriday, June 7, 2013 - 2:05 AM

The Youth Girls Competition was launched in the metropolitan area on Mother’s Day in a significant step towards bridging the gap in the female player pathway,

Previously, only the most determined female players remained playing alongside boys in junior football competitions. Now there is a dedicated competition for females with teams located throughout different districts.

The Swans District paved the way by hosting a Youth Girls competition since 2008 and running development academy programs. They have been actively involved in increasing the opportunities for girls Girls, who travelled from all parts of the Metropolitan area to play.

With the arrival of the 2013 Youth Girls Competition for 13-17 year old girls, players finally have the opportunity to play for their local team.

Games are played before the WAWFL Reserves and League games and consist of 4 x 15 minute quarters over a 10 week season, with finals played in line with the WAWFL finals.

Initially hoping for 4 teams, the WAFC has been pleasantly surprised to double that with 8 teams from the 9 different Districts. It has been overwhelming with the amount of interest; teams aiming to field 12-15 a side have been able to field a full team of 18 players.

The teams currently involved are; South Fremantle, Swan Districts, Mt Lawley (East Perth), Joondalup Falcons (West Perth), Peel Thunderbirds, Perth Angels, Coastal Titans (Subiaco) and a joint Claremont/East Fremantle team.

Any girls interested in having fun, making new friends and learning to play football should contact their nearest district office. Clubs are welcoming all players of all skill levels.

Anyone interested in volunteering their time to help as a coach, manager or umpire would also be welcomed by the District. If you are unsure of what District you fall under please contact Female Football Coordinator Allana Dickie on 0439971010 or adickie@wafc.com.au
