Subiaco’s Olivia Wolmarans has laid the platform for a dominant WAFL Women’s season with a six-goal haul in the season opener last weekend.
The 16-year-old had a day out against East Perth as the Lions scored a crushing 95-point win at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
“I am so happy about my performance against East Perth and the fact that I kicked six goals was crazy, but it was only possible because of an amazing effort from each of the Subiaco girls who supported me,” she said.
“I’m so proud of the girls, our team is very new this year and we are all so positive and excited for this season and can’t wait to play East Fremantle this weekend.”
Part of the WAFC Pathway Program, Wolmarans feels prepared for a successful WAFLW season.
“Coming out of a very solid State U18 pre-season program helped me in all aspects of last weekend’s game,” she said.
“It was my best goalkicking so far, but Trent Cooper (WAFC) will tell you that I am very hard on myself and always want to play better.
“So even though it was maybe my best goalkicking game, there is still other aspects of my game that I would like to work on and improve.
“I am sure I will play predominantly as a key forward, but I am always ready to hop in the ruck because I have some good fun in the middle.”
The Year 11 student at Aranmore Catholic College has clear goals for 2024.
“I want to have a really solid WAFLW season, State U18’s and try to get into the National Academy this year, “she said.
Trent Cooper, Manager Female Talent Programs and Coaching Specialist at the West Australian Football Commission, declared the 16-year-old a player of huge potential.
“Olivia was All-Australian in the 16’s last year and there are very few players with her athleticism and 180cm height,” Cooper said.
“Olivia is already producing GPS numbers that are at AFLW standard and her work rate takes her to contests where she can then use her weapons.
“She has shown she is a very capable ruck as well and the hybrid Forward/Ruck is so valuable at all levels of football in the modern game.”
Facing the reigning premiers on Sunday at Sullivan Logistics Stadium is Olivia’s next challenge.
“We know it is not going to be an easy game and they will come out strong like they usually do, but I think it’ll be a good game to come and watch,” Wolmarans said.
“Last year they had a very good team, and our job will be to adjust to their strengths which we think we can do.
“It should be a cracking match.”
