AN INCREDIBLE Foundation/WA Day weekend of WAFL football concluded on Monday with East Perth storming home to win the Perth derby following two big upsets on Sunday with South Fremantle beating East Fremantle and Subiaco knocking off Claremont.
The round began on Saturday with Swan Districts winning an incredible battle against Perth at Lathlain's Brownes Stadium by four points and then the terrific contests continued right throughout the holiday weekend.
Claremont led Subiaco all day at Claremont Oval on Sunday but the Lions booted the only four goals of the last quarter to inflict on the Tigers their first loss of 2013. Subiaco won in the end 9.10 (64) to 7.12 (54).
While that was a shock result, it was perhaps even more shocking in the Fremantle derby at East Fremantle Oval not so much because South Fremantle came out and won just its second game of the season, but in the emphatic way the Bulldogs beat the Sharks 21.13 (139) to 10.12 (72).
Monday was then left alone for the Perth derby at Leederville's Medibank Stadium and West Perth looked cruising towards a victory most of the day, but East Perth stormed home with the last six goals and only six of the final quarter to win, 17.12 (114) to 14.11 (95).
It took South Fremantle 15 minutes to get its first goal on the board at East Fremantle Oval on Sunday, but once it came the Bulldogs got on a roll and kicked four of the last five of the first quarter to open up a 15-point quarter-time advantage.
South Fremantle then piled on the first six goals of the second quarter to lead by 51 points and then still by 38 at half-time. A run of seven goals in a 13-minute stretch midway through the third quarter then saw the Bulldogs secure the derby win.
The lead got out to as much as 83 points before remaining at 68 by the final siren.
Ashton Hams and Ryan Cook vied for best on ground honours as they led the way for the Bulldogs. Hams finished with 34 possessions and three goals while captain Cook had 31 disposals and a goal as well.
Adam Guglielmana and Alistair Gillespie kicked three goals each also for South Fremantle with John Sgherza, Paul Mugambwa and Mitch Banner booting two apiece.
Gillespie also gathered 27 possessions to go with five marks, five clearances and four inside-50 entries in his best game with the Bulldogs after stepping up once ruckman Sean Tighe went off with a rolled ankle.
Toby Bairstow also picked up 30 touches for South Fremantle, Alex Grima 24, Banner 23, Jacob Martinez 23 (and nine tackles) and defender Dylan Ross 22.
East Fremantle never looked up for the contest from the outset but prime on-ballers Rory O'Brien (23 possessions), Richard Hadley (19) and Mark McGough (19) worked hard.
Max Duffy picked up 18 disposals and kicked a goal while Josh Simpson booted two from 16 touches. Rob Young kicked two goals for the Sharks in his first game since injuring his knee in Round 1.
It was a dour, low-scoring and inaccurate affair at Claremont Oval and even though the Tigers appeared to be doing just enough to get over the line throughout the opening three quarters, they never quite shook Subiaco off.
The Tigers led by 15 points at quarter-time, three at half-time and 14 at three quarter-time, but it was all Subiaco in the last quarter with the Lions kicking the only four goals to secure the 10-point victory as Claremont lost its first game of the 2013 season.
Subiaco didn’t have a multiple goal-scorer but the nine goals were enough to get over the line with Jason Bristow finishing with 28 possessions, George Hampson 25, Rob Forrest 20, Jarrod Kayler-Thomson 19, Chris Phelan 18 and Andrew McDougall 18 to go with 18 hit outs.
Paul Medhurst kicked three goals for Claremont and Ian Richardson two with captain Andrew Browne racking up 26 possessions, Mark Seaby 23 (and 33 hit outs), Jake Murphy 20, Patrick McGinnity 20 and Aaron Holt 18.
West Perth had the chance to move two games clear in second spot on the ladder with a win over East Perth on Monday and looked likely of doing that for most of the afternoon.
The Falcons led by four points at quarter-time and then as much as 23 points during the second quarter and still by 15 at the main break.
West Perth's advantage was then out to 27 points when Anthony Tsalikis kicked the first two goals of the third term with the Falcons still 23 points to the good heading into time-on of the quarter.
However, East Perth began to turn the tide just before three quarter-time to be within 18 points and then kicked the only six goals of the last quarter to record the 19-point victory and move up to fourth position on the WAFL ladder.
Former East Perth captain Michael Swan inspired the comeback in his first real impact of the season.
He had only played two league games previously this year and came off injured in both, but set up a crucial goal to Jamie Cripps to stretch East Perth's lead to seven points late in the game and then he kicked the sealer himself.
Swan finished with three goals to go with 18 possessions while West Coast's Cripps also kicked three goals with 21 disposals and Dean Cadwallader added three goals as well from 18 touches and eight marks.
Josh Smith, Garry Moss and Scott Lycett kicked two goals apiece for the Royals as well.
Aaron Sweet picked up 28 possessions, Craig Wulff 27, Brendan Lee 25, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls 24 and Blayne Wilson 18 in defence.
Tsalikis kicked four goals for the Falcons from 19 possessions and seven marks with Nick Rodda, Matt Johnson and Jason Salecic kicking two goals apiece.
Shane Nelson racked up 27 disposals before hurting his ankle midway through the final quarter with Jay van Berlo collecting 24 possessions, Aaron Black 23, Andrew Strijk 23 and Matt Guadagnin 22 in his 150th game for West Perth.
