Reigning Premiers East Fremantle will play Peel Thunder in a Grand Final re-match as part of a bumper opening round of the 2024 WAFL season, which includes Thursday night footy on the Easter Long Weekend.

After breaking a 25-year Premiership drought at Optus Stadium this year, the Sharks will travel to Lane Group Stadium in Mandurah on Easter Saturday (March 30) in what has become a traditional season opening match-up for both clubs.

Easter Saturday will also see Perth play Subiaco at Mineral Resources Park for the second year running in Round 1, while South Fremantle begins its campaign against East Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and Swan Districts host the West Coast Eagles at Steel Blue Oval.

The 2024 season begins with an Easter Thursday night showdown between West Perth and Claremont at Pentanet Stadium at 7.10pm. 

A focus on traditional rivalries will continue next year with ANZAC Day, WA Day and NAIDOC Rounds all standouts.
Perth will play a standalone game on ANZAC Day, April 25 against East Perth at Mineral Resources Park from 4.10pm, honouring our service men and women in a pre-match ceremony.

In a boost for the WAFL, with the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers travelling to Adelaide for the second edition of the AFL’s Gather Round, the local spotlight will focus on Round 2 of the WAFL on the weekend of April 6/7. 

Supporters will get their first taste of Derby action in Round 9 on WA Day, with South Fremantle at home to East Fremantle, while West Perth takes on East Perth, both matches scheduled for Monday, June 3.

On the bye weekend for the competition, WA is scheduled to play South Australia in a KIA Australia State Game on Sunday May 19 at Optus Stadium.

The 21-round home and away season will be followed by a four-week finals series, culminating with the WAFL Grand Final on Sunday 22nd September at Optus Stadium. 

WAFC Executive Manager Football Operations Scott Baker declared that opening the season on the Easter Long Weekend is designed to attract strong crowds, allowing for a family friendly experience. 

“WAFL clubs continue to create a fantastic atmosphere for fans and families, alongside the unique chance to listen to coaches and enjoy a kick on the ground at breaks,” he said. 

Baker believes players, clubs and fans should be excited about another highly competitive WAFL season. 

“Every year, the priority is to grow and enhance the WAFL, and with every game streamed live on the AFL and Streamer (Colts) app, as well as a game a week broadcast on Channel 7, the competition is more accessible than ever before.”

Viewership for the competition in 2023 attracted over 760,000 people across the 7 Network and AFL.com.au as fans consume the best in local football. 

Grand Final Day also produced an audience of nearly 240,000 across the screens of 7 through metropolitan and regional WA, with an average audience of more than 70,000.

The 21-round-home-and-away season aims to provide the fairest fixture for the most exciting state league competition in Australia. 

While the traditional timeslot of Saturday afternoon will be consistent throughout the season, the addition of alternative matchdays, including Thursday, Friday and Sundays provides fans with opportunities to see their favourite clubs.
 “Playing games across the weekend creates opportunities for the WAFL, including attracting a larger audience, both at the ground and on Channel 7, as well as supporting initiatives such as WA Day and NAIDOC Week,” Baker said.
