AFL Nines Premiers Decided In Grand Final WeekMonday, December 18, 2023 - 2:24 PM

Nearly 20 teams have been crowned AFL Nines Spring Premiers during Grand Final week.

The 2023 Nines Spring Competition ran over a 10-week period from October to December.

In total there were 11 Nines centres which hosted matches throughout WA with 18 different competitions being run each week.

More than 1,500 participants were involved with the program and a total of 176 teams ran out during the season.

Josh Embry, Metro Central Development Officer – Swans at the West Australian Football Commission, also declared the addition of women’s and junior AFL Nines competitions was embraced by footy lovers.

“We saw the first women’s only competition created and successfully run at the City Beach centre within the Claremont District; with 5 brand new teams participating,” he said.

“To add to this fantastic achievement, both Sorrento and Cockburn Nines centres successfully rolled out youth Nines competitions for kids between the ages of 14 and 16; Sorrento hosting 10 teams and Cockburn hosting 8 teams each week.”

The Nines competition provides a physical and social outlet, according to player feedback.

“Our team really enjoyed playing at the Cockburn centre again this Spring.

"Having played for a number of years now, this time of year is great when we can catch up as a group, socialise, and participate in a well organised Nines competition.

"It’s a lot of fun and enables us all to continue playing footy in some form, without the extensive commitments that playing footy would normally bring.

"We will definitely be back again!”
