New Breed of Local Coaches Receive Expert Guidance Tuesday, November 14, 2023 - 9:26 AM

Many of WA’s most talented young coaches have taken part in the latest Level 2 WAFL Talent Course.

More than 20 participants signed up for the program with a mix of male and female coaches working across a range of competitions including WAFL, WAFLW, WAFL Colts, Rogers Cup and WAFL Development Squads.

The course was facilitated by a range of quality Coach Developers including WAFC Culture and Leadership Consultant Matt Angus, East Perth Head Coach Ross McQueen, WA State 16s Head Coach and Peel Assistant Coach Michael Glassborow, Subiaco Men’s Assistant Coach and former Fremantle AFLW Captain Kara Antonio, along with Jack Crawshaw, WAFC Recruitment, Retention and Regional Umpiring Specialist.

Beatrice Devlyn, former AFLW Player at Fremantle and West Coast and current Subiaco WAFLW Player, was impressed with the presentation.

“The level 2 course on Sunday was a great opportunity to hear from some very esteemed coaches within WA football at varying levels (WAFL League, State 16s, AFLW, Colts) to gain different perspectives and then network with other young coaches.”

Devlyn explained how the session helped her gain a different perspective.

“Having Kara Antonio come down to discuss her leadership journey, having captained at AFLW level, was a unique insight for those in the room,” she said.

“As a player, it’s nice to get a glimpse into what the coaches go through in order to provide us the best opportunities to be successful.”

East Perth forward Tom Medhat and current WAFL Player and WA State Inclusion Team Head Coach:

“Sunday was a really great opportunity for me as a young coach to learn from some people who have done it for a long time and had a lot of success throughout their journeys,” Medhat said.

As the WA State Inclusion Team Head Coach, Medhat used the course to broaden his knowledge to take the next step in his coaching journey.

“All the speakers gave me a really good insight on how to develop as a coach,” he said.

“The WAFC has done a great job in the coaching space, ensuring that WA coaches have the best opportunities to learn from some really experienced people.”

There are two further Level 2 Courses open for registrations which will run in February and March.

These are open to all coaches who have a foundation accreditation (Level 1) and coach at youth or senior level in WA.

In addition, there will be a female specific stream in the February Level 2 Course, with all female coaches encouraged to sign up and hear from quality female coach developers.
