ROUND 6 of the WAFL had a bit of everything with there now being one unbeaten and one winless team left in the competition and while there were some starring performances, there were some devastating injuries as well.
The action began on Saturday at midday at East Fremantle Oval with East Perth beating East Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.14 (86).
Then down the road at Fremantle Oval, Subiaco kept South Fremantle winless running out 16.17 (113) to 10.12 (72) victors while in the battle of the unbeaten sides, Claremont beat West Perth 13.9 (87) to 10.8 (68) at Claremont Oval.
Then on Sunday, Peel Thunder recorded its first win of the season beating Swan Districts at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium 15.8 (98) to 12.12 (84).
The results leave Claremont (5-0) alone on top of the ladder from West Perth (4-1), East Fremantle (3-2) and Perth (3-1). Just outside the top four is Swan Districts (2-3), Subiaco (2-3) and East Perth (2-3). Peel (1-4) is eighth with South Fremantle (0-5) on the bottom.
While there were some tremendous individual performances, there were also some serious injuries to some of the most decorated veterans in the competition.
Two of them occurred at Fremantle Oval when dual Subiaco defender Ben Randall suffered a compound fracture of his lower leg and was taken straight to hospital for surgery.
In the same game, 173-game South Fremantle swingman Andrew McCarrey hurt his knee and could require a full knee reconstruction depending on what scans show early in the week.
Then at Claremont Oval, dual Claremont premiership utility Trinity Handley broke his ankle but should return within 10 weeks while the other pair could struggle to resume their terrific WAFL careers.
East Perth kicked seven goals to three in the first quarter to open up a handy lead over East Fremantle, and the Royals held on to beat the Sharks by 10 points.
Mat Seal kicked three goals with Josh Smith and Paul Johnson adding two apiece. Brendan Lee racked up 34 possessions, Craig Wulff 30 and Freddie Clutterbuck 27.
Ryan Lester-Smith booted four goals for the Sharks with Mitch Boyle adding two. Rory O'Brien racked up 32 disposals, Steven Dodd 26 and Tom Howlett 21.
Claremont led West Perth by 25 points at Claremont Oval and then withstood a terrific third quarter from the Falcons to run out 19-point winners.
Ian Richardson kicked three goals for the Tigers with Anton Hamp and Mark Seaby booting two each. Jake Murphy racked up 28 disposals, Ryan Neates 27 and Casey Sibosado 22.
West Perth lost Laine Rasmussen and Joe Morrow to injury early, but continued to battle hard all afternoon. Mark Hutchings and Kody Manning kicked two goals each with Aaron Black picking up 27 disposals, Shane Nelson 24 and Steven Browne 23.
Subiaco had a slow start against South Fremantle, but dominated the last three quarters to end up winning by 41 points.
Ryan Herring kicked four goals with Brad Stevenson adding three and Alliston Pickett and Jason Bristow two each. Jarrod Kayler-Thomson had 34 disposals, George Hampson 30 and Ray Daniels 24 for the Lions.
Kris Miller, Anthony Collica and Alistair Gillespie kicked two goals each for South Fremantle with Ryan Cook gathering 30 possessions, Mitch Banner 32, Haiden Schloithe 23 and Craig White 23.
Peel put on a massive seven-goal second quarter to open up a match-winning lead over Swan Districts on Sunday, and the Thunder held on to win by 14 points.
Marlon Motlop kicked three goals against his former side with Brad Holmes, Hayden Crozier and Devin McFarlane booting two apiece. Cruize Garlett racked up 30 possessions, Viv Michie 25, Brendon Jones 25, Jamason Daniels 22 and defender Paul Bower 21.
Kirk Ugle kicked four goals for Swans with Tim Geappen, Dayle Garlett and Aaron Elari adding two goals each. Elari also had 28 touches, Kyle Hams 29, Shaun Hildebrandt 29, Wayde Twomey 28 and Brett Robinson 27.
